Senior Manager – Detection Engineering
Fastly is looking for a Senior Manager to lead our Security Detection Engineering team. In this role you will grow and shape our detection engineering program and level up our security incident response processes. The ideal candidate is hands‑on, technical, and experienced in security engineering, detection development, and incident response. You thrive on a practical, risk‑based approach to security—focusing on impact and driving automation wherever possible while keeping things efficient.
Responsibilities
Shape and execute the long‑term strategy for detection engineering, security incident response, threat intelligence, and threat hunting.
Lead efforts to build detections, tools, automations, and integrations that strengthen our threat detection and response capabilities.
Mentor, grow, and support a team of security engineers.
Work with Fastly’s Incident Management team to improve our security incident response processes, playbooks, and metrics.
Partner with engineering to implement security controls.
Lead security incidents for the company.
Qualifications
Empathetic and inclusive leader with experience leading a team of security practitioners.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to effectively communicate security risks and recommendations to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Technical understanding of attacker threats and exploitation techniques, with first‑hand experience in investigating them.
Experience scaling a detection engineering program and building high‑fidelity detections‑as‑code.
Experience leading large cross‑functional security incidents and conducting security investigations, including log analysis.
Experience securing, identifying threats, and responding to incidents in a major public‑cloud infrastructure such as AWS or GCP.
7‑10+ years of relevant experience; we are open to strong candidates with varying backgrounds who can demonstrate equivalent expertise and impact.
Preferred Experience
Published security research or speaking at community events on detection engineering or security incident response.
Familiarity with content delivery networks (CDN), edge cloud platforms, or other Fastly products and services.
Experience with Linux administration at scale and associated intrusion/manipulation techniques, and standard methodologies for system hardening and process isolation.
Work Hours
This position requires availability during core business hours and support of an escalation‑tier on‑call rotation.
Work Location(s) & Travel Requirements
Locations: New York, NY; San Francisco, CA; Denver, CO.
Fastly embraces a largely hybrid model for most roles, allowing employees flexibility to split time between the office and home.
May require travel as needed by your role or at the discretion of your manager.
Salary The estimated salary range for this position is $211,370 to $253,644. Starting salary may vary based on permissible, non‑discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and location. This role may be eligible to participate in Fastly’s equity and discretionary bonus programs.
