The primary purpose of the UNC Health Nash Security Department is to provide comprehensive and professional public safety services for the Health System, as well as secure and convenient access to the UNC Health Nash campus and associated properties. Responsibilities

Administrative Management & Leadership: supervise sworn and non‑sworn personnel, ensure compliance with case law and NC statutes, oversee use of force, pursuit, personnel actions, early warning systems, standards compliance, property and evidence management, and daily internal operations. Emergency Management: serve as Commander for Security of Emergency Management incidents in accordance with the Incident Command System. Training & Development: ensure fair and equitable hiring, maintain mandatory training programs, document all training, and keep certifications current with the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission. Strategic Operations: develop divisional annual goals, manage special projects to address campus crime patterns, schedule and personnel assignments for effective law enforcement response, and maintain policy and procedure compliance with best practices. Resource Management: manage personnel coverage 24/7 while controlling overtime, maintain police equipment and vehicles, evaluate investigative databases, conduct required inspections, and provide recommendations to the Vice President of Support Services regarding projected expenditures. Personnel Management & Development: oversee Field Training Program, conduct performance appraisals, create personnel performance plans, ensure equitable performance reviews, and conduct annual performance appraisals in accordance with UNC Health Nash HR procedures. Partnerships & Collaboration: serve as liaison to local, state, and federal law enforcement and government agencies, disseminate emergency notifications, participate in UNC Health committees, and develop long‑term strategic plans for police and emergency services delivery. Qualifications

Educational Requirements: Master’s degree in criminal justice, police science, public administration, or a related field; or Bachelor’s degree with five years of relevant healthcare experience and ten years of progressively responsible command level management experience in a police agency. Certifications: International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator, Advanced Law Enforcement Certification in North Carolina, and graduation from a nationally recognized advanced law enforcement management program such as the FBI National Academy or equivalent. Professional Experience: experience managing an emergency communications center, large events, and large‑scale emergency response. Licensure/Certification: must meet physical and psychological requirements of the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training standards Commission, pass sworn law enforcement officer or private protective security background investigation, and currently be a sworn law enforcement officer in North Carolina or eligible to obtain certificate within 180 days of hire.
