Summary Balfour Beatty is seeking a Data Architect to work in Dallas, TX. This is a hybrid position (three days in the office, two from home).
The Data Architect will own the vision, architecture and delivery of our BI platforms across AWS, SQL Server, Azure and Microsoft Fabric. You’ll collaborate closely with business stakeholders, guide a small team of BI developers, and drive our migration from SQL Server to the Azure/Fabric data stack.
Job Responsibilities Platform Ownership
Manage and enhance two BI environments:
AWS (S3, Redshift, Lambda ETL, Power BI)
SQL Server stack on EC2 (SSAS, SSIS, BIML, Power BI)
Lead the end-to-end migration of our SQL Server BI solution to Azure Data Factory, Synapse Analytics, OneLake and other Microsoft Fabric services
Design, build and optimize data pipelines, semantic models and reports
Implement best practices for data modeling (Star/Snowflake schemas), performance tuning and security
Delivery Management
Define project scopes, schedules and priorities for multiple concurrent BI initiatives
Track milestones, manage risks and report status to stakeholders
Stakeholder Engagement
Partner with business customers to gather requirements, scope new initiatives and translate needs into technical designs
Facilitate design reviews, demo sessions and end‑user training
Mentor and coach BI developers/analysts; conduct code reviews and knowledge‑sharing sessions
Establish and evangelize standards for data governance, testing and documentation
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field
5+ years of hands‑on BI development and architecture across both AWS and SQL Server stacks
Deep hands‑on experience with Power BI and DAX for advanced calculations, custom visuals and performance tuning
Strong expertise in:
AWS BI: S3, Redshift, Lambda
SQL Server BI: SSAS, SSIS (on EC2)
Azure & Microsoft Fabric: Data Factory on Fabric, Synapse Analytics, OneLake, Data Activator, Azure Analysis Services
Exposure to BIML a plus
Proven track record migrating SQL Server BI solutions to Azure/Fabric
Experience with data modeling, ETL design patterns and semantic layer development
Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate and/or Microsoft Fabric Data Engineer (preferred)
