NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County . The Behavioral Health Center offers a comprehensive suite of services for mental health including First Episode Psychosis program, medical services, opioid treatment, substance use disorder services, a specialized unit for people with intellectual disability, an inpatient extended care unit focusing on the needs of our homeless patients and preventing recidivism, ketamine‑assisted therapy, and inpatient and outpatient services for adults and children. Our skilled team—including adult and child and adolescent psychiatrists, psychologists, internists, nurses, social workers, creative arts therapists, peer counselors, and addiction counselors—delivers compassionate care in a secure environment, respecting each patient’s dignity and partnering with them on their recovery journey. We also provide educational resources for patients and caregivers to enhance their understanding of mental health and addiction issues and available treatments.

Our services range from psychopharmacology and various forms of psychotherapy (individual, group, and family) to specialized programs like outpatient withdrawal management, medication maintenance (including methadone and buprenorphine), overdose prevention, and support for personal development goals such as employment and education. Each patient receives a personalized assessment and treatment plan tailored to their specific needs, ensuring a holistic approach to recovery and health management.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The identified psychiatrist provides direct patient care and maintains focus on key strategic priorities including patient experience, access to care, increased market share, and improving financial stability across the SUD Services.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Substance Use Disorders Services

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Establishes a therapeutic rapport with patients; uses motivational interventions to encourage involvement in the treatment and recovery process.

Observes confidentiality rules and respects rights of patients.

Substance Abuse services:

Completes psychiatrist assessment timely.

Verifies diagnosis of Substance Use Disorder/s and the need for treatment including considerations for appropriate level of care.

Identifies patient’s medical and mental health needs related to care.

Screens individuals, provides care, makes referrals as necessary, and follows up as needed.

Communicates regularly with treatment team, sharing on‑going assessment and impressions.

Treatment Planning:

As a member of the Treatment Team, contributes issues to be addressed and identifies goals, objectives and interventions with expected time frames.

Monitors the progress of individuals in treatment and reviews the appropriateness of continued treatment and level of care.

Contributes to the completion of Treatment Plans and Utilization Reviews.

Medical Management:

Provides pharmacotherapeutic interventions for substance use disorders and mental health disorders.

Reviews and acts upon lab results and other medical data.

Attends and participates in staff and team meetings as scheduled.

Treatment Program Specific:

Orders psychotropics and other pharmacotherapy interventions.

May administer medications in accordance with established policies/procedures and state and federal regulations.

Environment and Emergency Situations:

Responsible for establishing and maintaining an environment conducive to safe and quality patient care and the goals of the program by following all policies and procedures.

Maintains an awareness of and assists with implementation of program policy and procedures regarding safe behaviors.

Assess emergency situations, identifies resources and/or assistance needed, takes appropriate actions in accordance with policies and procedures and calls for crisis code.

Communicates clear, accurate and timely reports to appropriate staff regarding any emergency or unusual situation that has occurred; completes incident and other reports appropriate, participates in investigations, and implementation of recommendations for improvement.

Documentation:

Documents prescriptions and medication orders consistent with policy.

Documents all activities, services, and referrals provided in accordance with program policies.

Completes all notes in accordance with policy, within the specified timeframes and in a comprehensive and professional manner.

Assists with completion of program statistical reports as required, including reports to OASAS and Central Office.

Educational Activities:

Attendance at SUNY Departmental Grand Rounds and other academic events appropriate to specialty.

Teaching and training of medical students, residents, and other hospital staff in the recognition and treatment of substance use disorders and comorbidities.

Quality Assurance Activities:

Participate in regulatory compliance with all relevant agencies (OMH, OASAS, TJC, OMH, etc.).

Attend assigned Divisional and Departmental Quality and Safety related meetings.

Participates in Divisional activities related to Quality Improvement

Participates in selection of key quality indicators and chairs the BHMS QC Subcommittee.

Serves on Behavioral Health Incident Review Committee and Quality Council.

Qualifications

Must be board eligible or board certified in Psychiatry, or Addiction Medicine.

M.D. or D.O. from an accredited school of medicine.

If Psychiatrist, must have completed residency training in an accredited program within Psychiatry.

Subspecialty Board Certified in Addiction Medicine (ABAM) or Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) (current or anticipated within 4 years).

License to practice medicine in the State of New York.

Active DEA Registration including waiver to prescribe buprenorphine (current or anticipated within 6 months).

At least one year of education, training, and/or experience in substance use disorder services.

Wages and Benefits include:

Annual Base Salary: $224,000* (board eligible); $266,200* (board certified) based on a 40‑hour work week. Additional compensation available for extra call or sessional/per diem hours.

The annual total value of the compensation package is estimated at $350,400** (board eligible) and $396,820** (board certified), which includes the baseline salary, 401(k) contribution, sessional/per diem hours, and other factors as set forth below:

Estimated annual compensation for 10 additional sessional/per diem hours worked per week is $104,000***.

401(k) Company Contribution (subject to IRS contribution limits):

Employees are immediately vested in a 3% company contribution of base earnings. No employee match is required.

After one year of service, employees receive an additional 7% company contribution of base earnings. No employee match is required.
