Save Job

Data is at the center of everything we do. As a startup, we disrupted the credit card industry by individually personalizing every credit card offer using statistical modeling and relational database technology in 1988, and now have become a Fortune 200 leader in data‑driven decision‑making.

As a Data Scientist at Capital One, you’ll be part of a team that’s leading the next wave of disruption at a whole new scale, using the latest computing and machine learning technologies and operating across billions of customer records to unlock opportunities that help everyday people save money, time and agony in their financial lives.

Team Description The Fraud Data Science team builds machine learning models that protect our customers and Capital One against fraudsters. We prevent fraud at many steps of a customer journey, from application to spending and payments, using real‑time models, while automating and innovating to improve customer experience.

Role Description In this role, you will:

Partner with a cross‑functional team of data scientists, software engineers, and product managers to deliver a product customers love

Leverage a broad stack of technologies—Python, Conda, AWS, H2O, Spark, and more—to reveal insights hidden within huge volumes of numeric and textual data

Build machine learning models through all phases of development, from design through training, evaluation, validation, and implementation

Use interpersonal skills to translate complex work into tangible business goals

The Ideal Candidate is:

Customer first: loves analysis and creation, shares passion for making the right decision for customers

Innovative: continually researches and evaluates emerging technologies, stays current on state‑of‑the‑art methods, and seeks opportunities to apply them

Creative: thrives on bringing definition to big, undefined problems, loves asking questions and pushing hard to find answers, and is not afraid to share new ideas

A leader: challenges conventional thinking, works with stakeholders to identify and improve the status quo, and is passionate about talent development for own team and beyond

Technical: comfortable with open‑source languages, passionate about developing further, has hands‑on experience with open‑source data science solutions and cloud platforms

Statistically‑minded: built models, validated them, and backtested them; understands confusion matrices, ROC curves, clustering, classification, sentiment analysis, time series, and deep learning

A data guru: “big data” doesn’t faze them; skilled at retrieving, combining, and analyzing data from diverse sources and structures, knowing that understanding data is key to great science
