Title Head Coach

Reports To Building Administrators and the Director of Athletics

Employment Terms

Employment terms covering compensation, benefits, and working conditions are specified by the Board of Education’s policies, procedures, and agreements.

Extra-duty stipend position, in addition to the certified role, determined by district's salary schedule for the specific sport.

Seasonal commitment based on the sport season, including pre‑season, regular season, and post‑season responsibilities.

Annual appointment, subject to renewal based on performance and program needs.

Vary by season and competition schedule; includes after‑school hours, evenings, and occasional weekends.

FLSA Exempt

Position Overview The Head Coach leads and manages all aspects of a high school athletic program, including practices, game planning, and team development. This role promotes sportsmanship, academic success, self‑esteem, and personal growth in student‑athletes while ensuring compliance with school and state athletic regulations. The Head Coach also collaborates with staff, mentors assistant coaches, and supports the school’s mission through positive leadership and effective communication.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in education preferred.

Valid Missouri Teacher Certificate.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Skills in human relations, leadership, and conflict management.

Knowledgeable of coaching techniques that meet the diverse needs of students.

Knowledgeable of and adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations.

Abide by all rules and regulations established by the Poplar Bluff R‑I Board of Education.

Abide by and uphold all rules and regulations established by the Missouri State High School Activities Association.

Actively pursue licensure to drive a school bus suitable for the sport they are coaching.

Performance Responsibilities

Coach individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport.

Plan and schedule a regular program of practice during season.

Work closely with the Athletic Director in scheduling interscholastic contests.

Recommend purchase of equipment, supplies, and uniforms, as appropriate.

Maintain an accurate, up‑to‑date inventory of all uniforms and equipment.

Maintain necessary attendance forms, insurance records, and similar paperwork.

Oversee the safety conditions of the facility or area where the assigned sport is conducted.

Establish performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition.

Enforce discipline and sportsmanship at all times, establishing and overseeing penalties for breach of standards.

Have a working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the sport.

Reflect a favorable impression of the Poplar Bluff R‑I School District in interactions with other schools and communities.

Expectations of Poplar Bluff Coaches

Follow all policies set forth by the board of education.

Follow all building and department rules and procedures.

Desire to create a positive influence on players, fans, colleagues, and others; the desire to win should never override the health, safety, or welfare of the athletes.

Possess strong values and work ethic.

Motivate those associated with the program to have a supportive sense of ownership.

Promote the athletic program by strategically involving parents and media.

Establish and maintain positive relationships with persons involved in the school’s operation.

Understand and control requirements to respond to a dynamic setting even during high‑stress situations.

Be organized and prepared, flexible, and aware of the need for change.

Be a continuous student of the game, seeking better methods, techniques, and strategies.

Be dedicated and committed to the coaching profession.

Take an active role in preventing drug, alcohol, and tobacco abuse.

Be thoroughly acquainted with contest rules and interpret them for team members.

Use influence to enhance sportsmanship among spectators and instruct players on sportsmanship responsibilities.

Show respect and support for contest officials.

Keep the Athletic Director informed of major problems and decisions.

Be a proactive host to opponents, treating them as guests.

Inform players of expected conduct at all school facilities, locker room, bus, etc.

Explain potential dangers of participating in the sport.

Condition players appropriately.

Turn off lights, lock doors, and secure building and equipment.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Factors

Ability to work in a climate‑controlled building, as well as in inclement weather.

Ability to stand, walk, and move around for long periods of time.

Ability to see and read, with or without vision aids, a computer screen and printed materials.

Ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels, and on telephone.

Manual dexterity to operate a telephone and enter data into a computer using both hands.

Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation, on telephone, and addressing groups.

Ability to exert up to 30 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

Ability to lift, bend, stoop, pull, grasp, and carry a variety of objects of different shapes and sizes.

Ability to perform other duties assigned by the Superintendent or designee.

Evaluation Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board's policy. The head coach will be evaluated by the Building Principal and Athletic Director at the end of the season.
