Substation Senior Structural Engineer
Join HDR’s Power Delivery team as a Substation Senior Structural Engineer (Substation Sr. SE) responsible for the design, review, and oversight of high‑voltage substation structural components up to 500 kV.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, oversee, review, and/or execute structural engineering tasks for substation members such as rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes, including detailed design, calculations, and fabrication detailing.
Lead, oversee, review, and/or execute foundation design tasks for substation structures, including drilled piers, spread footings, and driven piles, using industry‑standard software.
Support physical layout designs, plans, elevations, sections, details, and associated bills of materials.
Prepare or review construction specifications and materials.
Assign project tasks and provide technical guidance to team members.
Coordinate and perform quality checks and reviews for project deliverables in accordance with HDR Quality Management Systems (QMS) requirements.
Collaborate with transmission line civil/structural engineers for cross‑training and resource sharing.
Collaborate with other engineers to develop and maintain standards.
Work independently and mentor, train, or supervise Project Engineers, EITs, or CADD/Designers.
Lead multiple projects concurrently, utilizing teams in different locations.
Participate in technical training, seminars, and develop technical papers or presentations for industry conferences.
Participate in project reviews as needed; some travel may be required.
Preferred / Desired Qualifications
Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.
SE license or ability to obtain; preference for Hawaii or California license.
Experience with physical/outdoor design of high‑voltage switchyard and substation projects up to 500 kV.
Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE‑113, and related standards.
Proficiency with design software such as PLS‑Tower, Mathcad Prime, STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L‑Pile, or equivalents.
Previous consulting firm experience.
Minimum 10 years of technical design experience in high‑voltage substation projects, including foundation and steel structural design.
Strong communication, conceptual, organizational, problem‑solving, and collaboration skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
Minimum 10 years of structural engineering experience related to building design.
Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the job location (PE or P.Eng).
Experience with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar analytical software.
Experience in design calculations, layouts, and detailing of steel, concrete, masonry, and wood.
Understanding of gravity and lateral analysis.
Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm.

Salary range: $132,107 – $204,500 (based on skills, experience, education and location).
Schedule: Full‑time. Employment type: Regular.
