Responsibilities

Prepares and organizes samples for testing, including racking, aliquoting, and tube preparation.

Labels, handles, processes, transports, and stores specimens.

Identifies sample problems and assists in resolution; demonstrates problem‑solving on service and production issues.

Prepares testing equipment and assists with preventive maintenance; notifies technical staff of equipment problems.

Assists licensed personnel (CA only) or delegated supervisor (non‑CA) in pre‑analytic and post‑analytic testing activities.

Prepares pre‑analytical reagents and controls using automated or fixed‑volume measuring devices; submits documentation for approval.

Maintains accurate records of reagents or media using established procedures, formulas, and stock solutions.

Maintains inventory of consumable items; orders, receives, logs, dates, and stores reagents/supplies; rotates stock and restocks benches and equipment.

Sorts and accessioning incoming specimens into the LIS and delivers to designated platforms/department.

Performs data entry or transcribes data from results to computer for data reduction; prepares for licensed personnel review.

Tallies workload data and prepares reports as requested.

Assists in quality control procedures.

Prepares protocols, logs, and other documentation.

Identifies specimen problems and resolves or elevates to licensed personnel.

Assists a licensed person with validation, verification, and R&D activities.

Trains other Lab Associates and supports training programs.

Suggests improvements to efficiency and productivity; provides feedback. Acts as a resource for process improvement.

Demonstrates leadership through accountability and collaboration.

Answers phones, transfers calls, or takes accurate messages while maintaining confidentiality.

Ensures laboratory areas are neat, clean, and organized.

Complies with all health and safety policies, procedures, and practices; uses personal protective equipment.

Performs other duties as assigned. This list is not exhaustive.

Qualifications Required Work Experience:

1 year of histopathology, cytology, or other laboratory experience.

1 year handling Protected Health Information (PHI) and other patient information using a Laboratory Information System (LIS).

Preferred Work Experience:

2-3 years of laboratory experience.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Lifting 1–10 lbs frequently; 11–25 lbs occasionally; 26–50 lbs rarely.

Perform repetitive tasks with dominant hand.

Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods.

Good eye and hand coordination.

Knowledge

Working knowledge of reagent stability and storage.

Awareness of factors that influence test results.

Skills

Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Strong typing skills desirable.

Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Automation skills helpful.

Education Bachelor's degree in science required.

License/Certification Active California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (generalist or limited) license required.
