Job Description The University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, located in Baltimore, seeks applicants for a full-time, non‑tenure‑track position to teach in our innovative first-year Lawyering Program. An attorney selected for the fellowship will jointly hold the titles of Donald Gaines Murray Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor for an initial one‑year appointment, beginning July 1, 2026, with the expectation of reappointment for a second year based on satisfactory performance and the possibility of a third year.

The Murray Teaching Fellowship is designed to provide teaching experience and scholarly mentorship for accomplished law school graduates with legal practice experience who are interested in entering legal academia. The program honors Donald Gaines Murray, the school’s third Black graduate and a pioneer in civil‑rights law.

Lawyering Curriculum The Lawyering program is a core component of the first‑year JD curriculum, giving students a foundational skill set in contemporary legal practice. Students act as attorneys in simulated cases that incorporate topics from other foundational courses, review case files, develop factual records, interact with simulated clients and counsel, and present legal analyses in written and oral formats. The program develops both doctrinal knowledge and practical skills.

First‑year students enroll in Lawyering I in the fall and Lawyering II in the spring. Fall sections emphasize objective, predictive analysis and legal memoranda. Spring sections focus on persuasive advocacy, preparing students for appellate oral argument. The program culminates with mock appellate arguments.

Visiting Assistant Professor Responsibilities The successful applicant will teach two sections of Lawyering I (3 credits) in the fall and two sections of Lawyering II (3 credits) in the spring, each with about 15 students per section. Responsibilities include implementing the promoted simulation, creating lesson plans, preparing for class, teaching, providing written feedback on drafts and final submissions, holding individual conferences with students at least once a semester, assessing student performance, and assigning grades.

Teaching and Scholarship Mentorship Murray Fellows receive mentorship to prepare for careers in legal academia. Fellows attend the junior‑faculty workshop, present scholarship for review, collaborate with colleagues, and access the Thurgood Marshall Law Library. Fellows may hire a student research assistant for scholarship work and are eligible for up to $2,000 in conference registration and travel support.

Law School Campus The Maryland Carey Law School is located in downtown Baltimore, near courthouses, government agencies, major law firms, nonprofit organizations, and other professional hubs. It is within the Washington DC‑Baltimore metropolitan area, 40 minutes from Washington by rail.
