Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Group Fitness Director and as a member of the Health, Sports, Fitness and Aquatics Team, the Group Exercise Instructor at the Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center (part of Jewish Silicon Valley) is responsible for instructing group fitness classes and implementing member engagement initiatives aligned with the organizations core values. This role is vital in engaging and retaining members and in facilitating a safe and effective workout environment. The instructor creates a welcoming atmosphere that inspires members to achieve their fitness goals.

Principal Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Group Fitness Director, the instructor is responsible for:

Member Engagement

  • Creating a warm, welcoming environment for all members and guests
  • Building strong relationships with members and staff professionally
  • Encouraging member engagement beyond fitness activities
  • Working effectively with a diverse range of individuals at various fitness levels
  • Presenting professionally in large group settings to inspire members

Program Management
  • Applying knowledge of physiology and training to develop lesson plans for all levels
  • Staying updated on industry standards and trends in group exercise
  • Organizing and managing class schedules efficiently
  • Delivering high-quality classes based on sound principles of fitness programming
  • Managing large groups with varied fitness skills
  • Taking ownership of each class: starting and ending on time, maintaining studio tidiness, securing substitutes when needed

Leadership
  • Working independently and collaboratively
  • Building relationships with staff and members to promote engagement

Operational Effectiveness
  • Understanding members fitness needs in group settings
  • Knowing fitness certification standards and best practices
  • Supporting the overall operation of the fitness program in line with strategic goals
  • Using resistance equipment correctly and safely
  • Helping participants achieve their fitness goals within scope of practice
  • Understanding other programs and services at the APJCC

Risk Management
  • Responding appropriately in emergencies
  • Ensuring safe use of equipment
  • Enforcing safety regulations and eliminating hazards
  • Following safety procedures
  • Participating in safety trainings and drills


Minimum Qualifications

Education & Licenses:

  • CPR/AED certification
  • At least one nationally accredited Group Fitness Instructor certification
  • Clear background check including fingerprint assessment

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year in fitness instruction or related field


Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Work in a fitness or community center environment, with moderate exposure to elements such as temperature extremes. Ability to lift at least 45 pounds. Reasonable accommodations can be provided for disabilities.

This position requires a cleared background check via fingerprint and life scan assessment.
