Hazardous Waste Manager

UNH is seeking a motivated, self‑directed Hazardous Waste Manager to support all University of New Hampshire programs and activities. This position manages hazardous waste for teaching operations, research, dining, athletics, farms, and facilities operations.

Responsibilities

Hazardous Waste and Container Management (35%)

  • Oversee the full life cycle of hazardous waste – identification, collection, processing, accumulation, transportation, disposal.
  • Maintain the Central Hazardous Waste Accumulation Area, supervise waste shipments, determine regulatory status.
  • Inspect and monitor hazardous waste accumulation areas across campus to ensure compliance.

Compliance, Recordkeeping, and Reporting (25%)

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations through meticulous recordkeeping and reporting.
  • Prepare and maintain training records, shipping papers, waste profiles, and regulatory notifications; research disposal technologies and regulatory changes.
  • Advise management, represent the university to regulatory agencies, and prepare environmental health and safety reports.

Policy Development and Program Oversight (15%)

  • Develop, review, and update hazardous materials management policies and plans, including contingency, minimization, and spill response plans.
  • Evaluate and update waste management elements of environmental health and safety programs.
  • Collaborate with OEHS staff and researchers to implement best management practices.

Training, Consultation, and Outreach (10%)

  • Provide technical consultation and training.
  • Develop and deliver waste management training programs and educational materials for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Promote safe handling, storage, and disposal practices across the university community.

Contracts, Budget, and Staff Supervision (10%)

  • Develop and manage contracts with regulated waste vendors, coordinate with Purchasing Department.
  • Oversee program budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Hire, train, evaluate staff; assign responsibilities; monitor work activities.

Incident and Emergency Response (5%)

  • Manage university response to hazardous material incidents; direct resources, mitigate risks.
  • Determine reportable releases, notify regulatory agencies, coordinate with emergency responders.
  • Act as technical advisor to the Town of Durham Fire Department Incident Commander during emergencies.

Qualifications

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience

  • Master's in Environmental Health and Safety or related discipline and seven years of professional experience, including two years as supervisor; or Bachelor's degree with nine years of experience, including four as manager.

Required Licenses & Certifications

  • NH Hazardous Waste Coordinator Certification or ability to obtain certification.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Administrative and supervisory skills.
  • Professional certification in EHS technical discipline, or ability to obtain.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, codes, and guidelines.
  • Computer skills: spreadsheets, database management.
  • Ability to use protective equipment as needed.
  • Physical strength and dexterity to perform duties.
  • Respond promptly in person to UNH location.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant management experience in environmental health and safety in a university setting.
  • Proven background in developing environmental health and safety programs.

Compensation Pay Range
