We are seeking a dedicated and experienced American Sign Language (ASL) Sign Language Facilitator to work one-on-one with a fourth-grade student who is Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) and has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The ideal candidate will be fluent in ASL, possess a deep understanding of the unique communication and learning needs of DHH students, and have experience working with children on the autism spectrum. This position is vital to ensuring the student has full access to the general education curriculum and develops effective communication and social skills.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitation and Communication: Provide clear, accurate, and real-time ASL-to-English and English-to-ASL facilitation in the classroom and during school-related activities.
  • Support and Access: Ensure the student has effective access to instruction, peer interactions, and all classroom content.
  • Behavioral Support: Work collaboratively with the special education team to implement the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP), focusing on communication-based social and behavioral goals related to ASD.
  • Collaboration: Consult regularly with the classroom teacher, DHH teacher, special education staff, and other therapists to align communication strategies and educational goals.
  • Preparation: Review lesson plans and materials in advance to prepare vocabulary and concepts for effective facilitation.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate daily logs of services provided and student progress.

Qualifications

  • Fluency: Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience providing ASL facilitation/interpreting in an educational setting.
    • Experience working specifically with students who are DHH and have co-occurring disabilities, particularly ASD.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of DHH education, child development, and the unique sensory and communication profiles associated with ASD.
  • Certification (Preferred):
    • EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) score of 3.5 or higher OR
    • National certification from RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf).
  • Personal Attributes: Patient, flexible, highly organized, and an excellent collaborator.
