Description Northwestern Medicine has an exciting opportunity for either a Nurse Practitioner or a Physician Assistant to work in our ambulatory Infectious Disease department. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will be seeing new and follow‑up patient appointments for Infectious Disease / OPAT (Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy) patients. Schedule: Monday through Friday, days.
Essential Functions
Demonstrates clinical expertise and expanded knowledge through patient care activities, including diagnosis and management of a wide range of health problems.
Responsible for health outcome of an assigned patient population.
Collaborates with physicians and other health professionals.
Develops appropriate educational systems for patients, families and staff.
Mentors graduate students in advanced practice and patient care.
Actively participates in quality improvement and/or research pertinent to the area of expertise.
Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients’ health status by taking health histories and performing physical examinations.
Provide direct clinical care to patients.
Prescribe/orders medications, therapies; order and interpret laboratory tests, x‑rays and procedures according to clinical privileges.
Evaluate patients to determine the need for further health care.
Provide comprehensive teaching to patients and families.
Document all care and education in the medical record.
Refer to other disciplines as appropriate.
Consult other disciplines in areas of expertise.
Integrate research‑based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision making.
Exemplify a professional image in appearance, manner and presentation.
Advocate for patients, families, coworkers and the community.
Maintain certifications and continuing education as required for licensure and privileging.
Serve as a patient advocate and role model for “Patients First.”
Participate in unit/departmental/divisional or hospital committees or task forces as appropriate.
Provide comprehensive teaching strategies for patients and families.
Develop and participate in programs to meet continuing education needs of staff.
Serve as a role model and preceptor to students.
Provide formal education to internal and external groups pertinent to the area of specialty.
Participate in quality improvement and/or research initiatives for specific patient population as appropriate.
Qualifications
Master’s degree from an accredited nursing school or accredited Physician Assistant Program.
Current license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in Illinois, or Physician Assistant in Illinois.
Privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO).
Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification.
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
Controlled substance license and DEA registration required.
Preferred: Experience in Infectious Diseases management.
