About the Opportunity
At the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society (IBES), students and faculty conduct groundbreaking research and develop solutions to complex 21st‑century climate and sustainability challenges. Working at IBES combines an understanding of the natural world and human dimensions because environmental stewardship, human rights, and economic well‑being are inextricably linked. The STEP Program is a new initiative at IBES featuring expanded paid internships and research assistantships in climate, sustainability, and the environment for undergraduate students from across Brown.
Responsibilities
Guide the development and execution of the STEP Program across research, education, alumni engagement, and internal/external partnerships. Coordinate with the Center for Career Exploration (CCE) and other academic units, plus external organizations that serve as internship hosts. Act as a key liaison with Brown alumni, external stakeholders, and partners to source internship opportunities. Work with the IBES Advisory Council and leverage the IBES Alumni and Family Network. Collaborate with faculty to support high‑quality undergraduate research experiences in climate, sustainability, and the environment. Lead the development and delivery of curricular offerings such as classes, seminars, and training modules that support student success in internships and research. Oversee the planning and execution of a high‑profile speaker series featuring noted climate, sustainability, and environmental speakers. Play an executive role in the planning of the annual Brown Climate Career Fair in partnership with CCE. Conduct STEP program evaluation, including creation of evaluation tools (surveys, etc.) and analysis of results for stakeholders and program funders. Administer the STEP program in collaboration with IBES staff, receive support from the IBES Academic Specialist, and supervise part‑time undergraduate, graduate, and/or postdoctoral workers. Make decisions over program design, implementation, and reporting in consultation with IBES leadership, CCE staff, and the Brown community.
Qualifications
Advanced degree in science, educational administration, business, or a related field; or equivalent education and experience. 8+ years of experience in higher education administration, career advising, science, or a related field, including leadership level experience and 3+ years of supervisory experience. Experience with philanthropic fundraising and associated reporting/stewardship activities. Experience with budget planning and management. Experience with program evaluation and metric tracking. Experience in environmentally‑focused work is preferred.

Program design and management following specific timelines and milestones. Strategic planning and implementation expertise. Facilitation of cross‑team communication and collaboration. Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external constituents. Excellent written, oral, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills. Management of complex, multi‑month assignments with multiple contributors under strict timelines. Discretion with confidential information. Demonstrated leadership experience. Ability and interest in working in a fast‑paced campus environment with multiple priorities. Experience with internship programs, career development programs, or career services is preferred.
