Job Description WSP is currently searching for a

Senior Geotechnical/Geological Engineer

to join our New England practice.

We are part of the Earth & Environment Group and the candidate will work full‑time either fully in‑person or on a hybrid in‑person and remote schedule.

Available office locations include Merrimack, NH; Eliot, ME; Portland, ME; Boston, MA; Chelmsford, MA; or Worcester, MA.

This position will provide opportunities to lead investigation, design, improvement, and construction of infrastructure projects and systems in the public and private sector.

Tasks include foundations, soil & rock slopes, retaining walls, transportation (bridge and highway), pipelines, dams, mining, buildings, and private development projects.

The role blends office‑based engineering, project management, and hands‑on field activities with a focus on accuracy, safety, and quality.

Responsibilities

Work as an individual or as part of a cross‑functional team to execute multiple concurrent geotechnical projects.

Provide guidance and training to entry‑ and mid‑level geotechnical engineers.

Assist in analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of data from field investigations.

Maintain quality control standards for measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.

Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates.

Prepare data visualizations, tables, charts, reports, sketches, and illustrations for analysis.

Prepare and review technical reports and presentations on research, findings, and recommendations.

Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).

Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for data integrity, documentation, and record retention.

Interact with agencies, subcontractors, clients, drillers, and lab staff professionally.

Remain current in the latest geotechnical techniques and practices.

Collaborate with other engineers and planners on federal, state, and regional improvement projects.

Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct.

Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

5–7 years of post‑education engineering experience with prior geotechnical design experience.

Professional Engineer (PE) licensure or the ability to obtain it quickly.

Proficient knowledge of deep and shallow foundations, slope stability, seismic engineering, retaining walls, earth retention systems, rock mechanics, soil settlement, ground improvement, support of excavation, dewatering, design/build, and permitting.

Understanding of rock and soil mechanics for sub‑surface investigations and design of foundations and earth structures.

Knowledge of remediation, permitting, improvement, construction laws, codes, regulations, and record‑keeping.

Ability to make technical computations and apply engineering principles to plans and specifications.

Project management experience with small to mid‑level projects, including scoping and time/expense tracking.

Capability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations in design and construction contexts.

Effective interpersonal and communication skills for both engineering and non‑engineering audiences.

Strong self‑leadership, attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and prioritization.

Ability to work independently and guide junior team members with strict QA/QC adherence.

Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, Rocscience GeoStudio, spreadsheets, and related tools.

Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills for data collation, statistical analysis, and solution development.

Assertive leadership of subcontractors, drillers, and field personnel to complete tasks safely and efficiently.

Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Flexibility for schedules beyond the typical work week and occasional travel as required.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Civil or Geologic Engineering.

Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.

Experience managing small to mid‑size projects.

40‑Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.

Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
