Principal Duties and Responsibilities The Finance Director provides strategic financial leadership to ensure long‑term credibility, accountability, and operational efficiency of Mercy High School. This role oversees all financial and business operations of the school, supports informed decision‑making, and ensures compliance with best practices in non‑profit financial management. The Finance Director serves as the school’s cash manager and investment officer.
Upholds and promotes the mission, vision, and values of Mercy High School.
Serves as a key advisor to the President, Finance Committee, and Board of Trustees on all financial matters.
Provides timely and accurate financial reporting, analysis, insight, and recommendations to support strategic decision‑making and long‑range planning.
Leads and coordinates the annual budgeting process, works collaboratively across all school departments under the direction of the President.
Oversees the school’s fiscal accounting system in accordance with accepted non‑profit and governmental accounting standards.
Maintains robust budget controls to ensure alignment with approved budgets and organizational priorities.
Manages daily cash flow and invests available funds in accordance with school investment policies. Ensures adequate internal controls and safeguards to protect school assets.
Prepares and distributes timely and accurate monthly financial statements—including Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow along with variance analysis for the Finance Committee and Board.
Compiles, completes, and submits all required state and federal financial reports.
Oversees financial transactions related to student activities, capital projects, grants, and endowment funds.
Coordinates annual audit/review procedures and prepares comprehensive annual financial reports.
Prepares and distributes timely and accurate reports as required by Mercy Education Systems of America (MESA).
Requirements Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Works collaboratively with development staff to ensure timely and accurate reporting of grants and donations including restricted gifts.
Supervises billing, tuition collection, cash handling, and the safekeeping and distribution of all school funds.
Ensures timely and accurate processing of payroll, employee benefits, and accounts payable.
Serves as the primary liaison to banks, regulatory agencies, school employees, and families regarding financial matters.
Manages all insurance programs including business, liability, and employee health insurance.
Works with the President to coordinate Finance Committee meeting agendas and provides timely and accurate financial statements and budget variance analysis.
Attends Board of Trustees meetings and provides reports as requested.
Performs additional duties as assigned by the President.
Education and Experience
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred - Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with at least five years of professional related experience.
Strong background in non‑profit accounting principles, financial reporting, and audit preparation.
Proven leadership experience in budget development and financial oversight of multi‑million‑dollar annual budgets.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with administrative leaders, staff, and external partners.
Advanced skills in fiscal management, forecasting, and data analysis.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with Blackbaud, QuickBooks, and FACTS is preferred.
Ability to fulfill all essential functions of the position.
