The Department of History and Philosophy at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Florida is seeking a tenure-track (position #117760) Assistant Professor of Early American History (before 1850) to start in August 2026. In addition to expertise in Early American History, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in historic preservation, material culture, digital history, community-engaged practice, and/or oral history, and a strong track record in public practice, demonstrating imagination and skill in working collaboratively to connect history or historic sites with public audiences. Applicants whose professional interests align with the Public/Applied History or Maritime and Coastal History tracks of the History M.A. program are particularly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a dynamic research agenda appropriate for a high-performing regional comprehensive university; to inspire and train undergraduate and graduate students; and join with existing faculty in program administration and long-term planning. The full-time position carries a 3/3 teaching load on a 9-month contract. Teaching responsibilities include general education courses as well as upper- and graduate level courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise, including but not limited to “Colonial America,” “Revolutionary America,” “Public History,” and “Historical Methods.” The department especially welcomes candidates familiar with High Impact Practice (HIPs) pedagogies. In addition to teaching and scholarly activities, faculty are expected to perform service obligations at the department, college and university levels as well with community and professional organizations.

The successful candidate will join a small and collegial department that welcomes new and early career teachers/scholars. The department is looking for fresh perspectives, and an active, future-oriented teacher/scholar that will embrace UWF’s mission to deliver “a learner-focused university education that enables students from varied backgrounds to meet their career and life goals . . and advance the body of knowledge and enhance the prosperity of the region and the state.”

Position Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Early American History or closely related discipline from an accredited institution is required. The appointee will have a strong commitment to teaching, scholarship and creative projects, and/or service and other related activities.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in public history including historic preservation, material culture, digital history, community-engaged practice, and/or oral history.
