Position Overview The Atmospheric Data Assimilation Scientist will contribute to the development, implementation, verification, and enhancement of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models. This role focuses on advancing radar data assimilation techniques for CW3E’s in-house models and evaluating the impact of reconnaissance observations such as dropsondes and airborne radars on models and community NWP systems.
Responsibilities
Develop and refine forecast models and data assimilation schemes, focusing on atmospheric rivers and their impacts.
Analyze large datasets, including model outputs and multi-platform observations, to assess forecast performance.
Collaborate with colleagues and external partners on data assimilation systems, high-resolution simulations, and extreme weather events.
Communicate research findings through publications, presentations, and reports.
Support proposal development, project reporting, and mentor interns and early-career researchers.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Atmospheric Science or related field; Masters or Ph.D. preferred.
Experience with numerical weather prediction models on HPC platforms.
Strong background in data assimilation, numerical modeling, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Knowledge of large datasets and formats such as NetCDF, GRIB, HDF, binary.
Proficiency in programming languages including shell scripting, Fortran, C/C++, Python, NCL, Matlab; Linux proficiency.
Experience with radar data assimilation systems like GSI/JEDI/WRFDA/DART.
Excellent communication skills and scientific visualization experience.
Team-oriented with strong interpersonal skills.
Additional Details
This is a two-year contract position, renewable or convertible based on needs.
Salary range: $85,400 - $156,800 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
Worksite: SIO, with a schedule of days, 8 hrs/day, Mon-Fri.
