Position Overview

as a Senior Engineer The Senior Engineer – Substation is responsible for designing substations and utilizing applicable codes and client standards (if available). Preferably one with at least 3 years experience in Substation planning and transmission planning. Typical design may include general arrangement, equipment and electrical layout, elevation views, cable trench, grounding, conduit drawings, details, bills of material, and AC and DC power systems. The individual in this role will identify impacts of shutdowns and how extensive the associated equipment would be to bundle planned outages together. This will include contingency plan studies and power flow studies.
Hybrid in office requirement 3 days a week in Detroit, MI.
Responsibilities
Substation design including general arrangement, equipment and electrical layout, elevation views, cable trench, grounding, conduit drawings, details, bills of material, and AC/DC power systems, utilizing applicable codes and client standards (if available)
Design ground grids based on applicable codes utilizing industry available software
Design lightning protection and grounding plans
Complete conceptual designs and layouts for facility planning studies
Complete calculations such as AC and DC load, bus spans, and ampacity calculations
Create equipment and material specifications for procurement of engineered equipment as well as development of design scope and cost estimates
Accountable for providing additional support documentation as needed to assist procurement, construction and operation/maintenance of systems being designed
Direct and/or participate in client meetings
Assist in job site visits to collect/deliver design and engineering data
Review and ensure company’s Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) processes are being followed on all design packages
Mentor and provide guidance to developing engineers; maintain a good working relationship with internal groups supporting the project
Qualifications
Proficiency in AutoCAD required; knowledge of MicroStation (a plus)
Microsoft Office product application
Knowledge of relevant industry standards such as National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), National Electric code (NEC) and IEEE
Working knowledge and experience focused on development of physical electrical substation design
Prior utility or utility consulting experience, preferred
Ability to provide mentorship and guidance to developing engineers on the team; maintain good working relationship and collaborate with other multi-discipline project team members
Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal and written skills
Excellent document management and organizational skills
Strong attention to detail; analytical and problem‑solving skills
Ability to effectively prioritize when provided with multiple projects and deadlines.
