Equipment Operator

Ferrous Processing and Trading (FPT), a wholly‑owned business of Cleveland‑Cliffs, is a premier processor of scrap metals in North America. An immediate opportunity exists for an Equipment Operator on the Day Shift at our Canton, MS location. The Equipment Operator is responsible for processing scrap metals using various tools and equipment.
Summary of Responsibilities
Ensure adherence to safety standards, including use of required PPE, remove hazards, and maintain cleanliness of the site.
Operate and maintain equipment such as wheeled crawlers, pedestal crawlers, forklifts, skid steers, manlifts, street sweepers, and water trucks.
Respond to hand signals or radio commands for equipment movement.
Load and unload materials using equipment including magnets and grapples.
Sort recycled materials and metals to separate high‑grade metals and remove non‑conforming metals.
Operate and maintain a load baler and shredder using a grapple or magnet.
Perform tasks involving physical labor using hand tools such as torch, bander, saw, and wire snips.
Conduct daily equipment inspections as required.
Identify scrap grade, type, and any undesirable elements.
Position trailers and containers in the yard and empty gaylord boxes as needed.
Assist mechanics with maintenance of plant equipment.
Interact with customers or drivers to direct or assist them.
Carry out additional tasks and operate equipment as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years of age.
High School Diploma, GED, or 1+ years of heavy equipment operator experience.
Ability to read, write, and perform basic math.
Ability to work independently.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to maintain accurate records.
Ability to follow oral and written communication.
Ability to climb ladders or steps.
Physical endurance for daily outdoor work.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability to work cooperatively with employees and the public.
Capacity to work in an environment with dust, dirt, vibrations, extreme climate, and changing weather.
Pre‑employment background, physical, and drug screening required.
