Toyon is seeking a highly capable and motivated professional to support the integration, assembly, and testing of new sensing technologies. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in sensor integration, continuous air sampling systems, electrical wiring and testing, and mechanical packaging. This role will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to bring sensing platforms from concept to operational prototype. The position will contribute throughout the project lifecycle: contributing and/or leading technical proposal efforts; project planning and definition; project management and coordination during implementation; subject matter expertise once systems have been deployed.
Key Responsibilities:
Assemble and integrate environmental, chemical, biological or radiological sensors into novel, custom platforms
Define designs for continuous air sampling hardware configurations and oversee or perform the assembly working with a technician
Design and fabricate electrical wiring harnesses and interconnects for sensor modules
Package sensor systems into field‑deployable housings
Troubleshoot and validate sensor performance
Configure and/or program sensors, sampling equipment, and integration components (e.g., controllers and I/O devices)
Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers on the full scope of system‑level integration, from the sensor to the user interface
Support prototyping, test fixtures, and documentation for iterative builds
Maintain inventory and assist in procurement of components for prototype systems
Participate in design reviews and provide hands‑on feedback from assembly perspective
Requirements
Ph.D., M.S or B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related field
At least 10 years work experience in relevant technical field
Expertise with sensing phenomenology for environmental, chemical, biological and radiological materials
Knowledge of vapor‑phase and particulate air sampling systems and related components (e.g., pumps, filters, tubing), embedded systems, controllers and data logging platforms
Proficiency in reading and interpreting mechanical drawings and electrical schematics
Proven track record of excellent customer service
Proven capability producing contract progress reports, technical proposals, test plans and results, and other technical reports.
Preferred Experience:
Ability to work independently and collaborate across disciplines
Hands‑on skills with mechanical assembly, 3D printing, basic machining tools, wiring, soldering, and electrical integration of low‑voltage sensors
Familiarity with IP‑rated enclosures and packaging for field deployment
CAD (e.g., SolidWorks) for mechanical design
Laboratory‑style assembly environmentsAssembling technical and cost proposals for new projects
Knowledge of the fundamental characteristics and transport phenomena of CBRN hazards

The annual pay range for the Senior Sensor Integration Engineer position is $150,000 to $215,000.
The posted pay range values provide the candidate with guidance on annual base compensation for the position, at a full time level of effort, exclusive of overtime, bonus, and benefits‑related compensation, over a range of qualifications that may fit hiring objectives. Toyon Research Corporation will consider the individual candidate’s education, work experience, applicable knowledge, skills and training, among other factors, when preparing an offer of employment.
