Under general supervision, the Electric Motor Repair Technician performs skilled electrical and mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of electric motors, generators, appliances, power tools, control auxiliaries and related electrical components.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties According to Civil Service Commission Rule 409, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

Maintain, rebuild, and/or repair electric motors and other electrical devices, equipment, and machinery such as D.C. and A.C. single and three‑phase motors, switches, controls, power tools, heaters, testing equipment, magnetic contactors, motor‑generators, batteries, and other related electrical equipment.

Inspect, diagnose, and/or test parts and equipment using megger, surge tester, hi‑potential tester, bar‑to‑bar tester, and other test equipment in accordance with departmental safety standards.

Rewind windings in stators, armatures and coils in AC and DC electric motors and equipment.

Cleans parts, tools, and equipment during the repair process and performs routine tasks with appropriate cleaning materials/equipment.

Read, understand and interpret maintenance manuals, schematic drawings and plans such as machine specifications, blueprints, layout work and drawings.

Drive other non‑revenue vehicles as required.

Operate hand, pneumatic, portable power and machine tools such as drill presses, grinders, wire crimpers, band saws, cutters and oxy‑acetylene torches in accordance with departmental safety standards.

Maintain written documents such as record of work performed and job reports.

Communicate and advise with supervisors, co‑workers and others on assignments and other work‑related matters.

Perform other related duties as needed.

Nature of Work: requires physical effort and dexterity using fingers, limbs and body, and working with high voltage equipment. May also involve exposure to dust and chemical fumes, requiring respirator and other personal protective equipment; and working in inclement weather where minor injuries may occur.

How to Qualify These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in this classification. Additional qualifications may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.

Experience:

Six (6) years of full‑time verifiable experience of which two (2) years must have been as a journey‑level electric motor repair technician, where duties included electrical and mechanical repair of all types of motors, motor‑generators, coils, stator and armature windings, and troubleshooting control circuitry and related devices.

Substitution:

Training in a recognized four (4) year apprenticeship program in electric motor winding repair may substitute for up to four (4) years of the required non‑journey‑level experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

License:

Possession of a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.

Note: Appointees to the position will be required to complete the National Safety Council Forklift Truck Operators training course conducted by the SFMTA.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted. One year of full‑time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours.

Verification of Education and Experience Applicants may be required to submit verification of qualifying education and experience at any point during the recruitment and selection process.

Selection Process After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following:

Written Multiple‑Choice Examination (Weigh 100%) Candidates deemed eligible and admitted to the examination process will be invited to participate in a written multiple‑choice test designed to measure knowledge, skills and abilities in job‑related areas that may include but not be limited to: knowledge of fundamentals of electricity related to electric motor winding, materials knowledge, ability to use hand and power tools, ability to read schematics and drawings, knowledge of safety.

This is a standardized examination and, therefore, test questions and test answers are not available for public inspection or review. For your reference, a Multiple‑Choice Test Preparation Manual is available on the DHR Website.

What Else Should I Know? Eligibility List/Score Report:

A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. The eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report will be subject to change after adoption.

The duration of the eligible list will be 12 months and may be extended with the approval of the Director of Transportation.

Medical Examination:

Candidates who are being considered for appointment may be required to pass a medical examination. Candidates who cannot meet the medical requirement will be placed under waiver until this requirement is met. The medical examination will be administered only to those applicants who are being considered for appointment.
