Base Pay Range $73,984.00/yr – $79,278.00/yr
Duties & Responsibilities Purpose of Position
– This class of positions encompasses work of varying difficulty and responsibility within a Dietary Department. All personnel perform related work under broad discretion to plan and direct operational activities.
Examples Of Typical Tasks – Assignment Level I
Makes nutritional assessments; interviews clients and/or families to obtain history of food habits and preferences; explains diet and monitors reaction.
Interprets laboratory, physical, and social data in medical records.
Monitors client food/drug interactions, consults physicians, and assists with nutritional analysis of menus.
Prepares client nutritional care plans; directs service of client diets; interacts with food service managers regarding master menu, recipes, and census.
Inspects kitchen areas and supervises kitchen staff to ensure standards are met; tests new recipes and reports results.
Counsels clients/families in therapeutic or modified diets at home; maintains records, writes reports, and documents follow‑up plans.
Supervises receipt, storage, and distribution of food and supplies; participates in nutritional training of students and rounds with health care teams.
Maintains liaison with community organizations for nutrition education and community health fairs.
Assignment Level II Responsibilities
Directs and supervises dietitians, technicians, food service supervisors, and cooks; manages work schedules and performance ratings.
Plans and evaluates master menus, consulting with medical staff regarding nutritional needs.
Inspects food service compliance with standards, regulations, and specifications; monitors receipt and use of supplies.
Prepares or assists with financial estimates of food requirements and monthly requisitions; monitors expenditures.
Develops educational and training programs for staff; provides nutritional counseling for outpatients.
Supervises planning for patient nutritional care and education in hospital and outpatient settings; develops and directs dietetic teaching programs per NYS requirements.
Assignment Level III Responsibilities
Organizes, plans, and directs dietary service functions; ensures staff compliance with clinical standards.
Plans orientation, in‑service programs, and quality assurance; implements performance indicators.
Prepares, revises, and updates the agency diet manual.
Conducts staff meetings, reviews menu plans, and coordinates quality assurance programs.
Assists Director in menu planning; assumes full responsibility in their absence.
Supervises inventory control, oversees issuance of food and supplies, and evaluates staff performance.
Conducts staff conferences and implements new policies and procedures in line with regulatory standards.
Participates in the evaluation of the dietary service and prepares audit reports.
Additional Duties
Participates in formulating internal regulations and procedural guidelines.
Assists in preparing and submitting the annual personnel service budget.
Conducts research on new developments in dietetics and special diets.
Develops and evaluates quality assurance measures, ensuring proper follow‑up.
Minimum Qualifications
Assignment Level I:
Baccalaureate in Dietetics or Foods and Nutrition from an ADA–approved program; or registration or eligibility for registration by the CDR as a Registered Dietitian or NYS Certification as a Dietitian‑Nutritionist.
Assignment Level II:
Registration or eligibility for registration by the CDR or NYS Certification as a Dietitian‑Nutritionist.
Assignment Levels III and IV:
Registration by the CDR or NYS Certification as a Dietitian‑Nutritionist.
Special Note for Post‑Acute Care (Long‑Term Care) Facilities:
All new Dietitians Levels I‑IV assigned to such facilities must have NYS Certification issued by NYSED at the time of hire. Prior hires must obtain certification on or before the specified dates.
