This job opportunity is in Western Digital Research.

The research team consists of about 100 scientists with PhDs in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Materials Science.

We focus on magnetic storage and memory roadmap, as well as emerging future technologies aligned with our experimental and theoretical expertise.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Lead and execute research projects in quantum computing, from superconducting qubit design, packaging, to low‑temperature RF metrology.

Collaborate with product teams to tackle novel challenges and develop innovative solutions.

Remain current with industry and academic trends, publishing papers and presenting at conferences.

Develop and present detailed reports and visualizations to communicate findings, trends and actionable insights to stakeholders at all levels.

Exhibit strong self‑motivation, thriving in an unstructured environment and independently pursuing fundamental research, including paper writing and publishing.

Exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills, presenting complex data and insights clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences.

Apply analytical skills to quickly grasp and address challenges outside the immediate field of expertise.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.

Experience in device nanofabrication, packaging, and low‑temperature characterization of superconducting qubit–based devices, plus room‑temperature characterization.

Experience in understanding and simulating RF measurements of qubit devices.

Additional experience with other device systems, materials characterization, electronic and optical device characterization is valuable.

Proficiency in a wide array of programming languages (Python, Rust, Tcl, C) and, where needed, knowledge of FPGA‑based microcontrollers.

At least 3 years of experience in superconducting qubit‑based device characterization, including graduate school.

Compensation & Benefits Details

The salary range reflects relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, performance, geographic location, shift, equity, and business needs.

Pay may vary; the range applies to positions in California, Colorado, New York or remote jobs eligible in those states.

Non‑exempt positions are eligible for overtime pay.

Shift differential pay may apply.

Eligible employees may be considered for bonuses under Western Digital’s Short‑Term Incentive Plan or the Sales Incentive Plan, and may participate in the annual Long‑Term Incentive program (restricted stock units or cash equivalents).
