Description Opengear designs and manufactures products for data center and remote site management. We are a rapidly growing supplier of sophisticated data center, network and remote site management products. Our customers include tech unicorns and Fortune 100 companies. We are the leading supplier of out-of-band solutions for IT infrastructure management and are actively exploring new solutions for hyper‑scale data center deployment and management. We are a global company with offices in Brisbane, Australia and Sandy, Utah.

What We Offer We are seeking an accomplished and innovative Principal Electronics Engineer to join our Brisbane-based hardware team. In this role, you’ll drive our hardware design strategy, serve as a technical authority on embedded electronics, and guide teams through complex development challenges. This is a hands‑on, high‑impact role requiring deep technical knowledge, product insight, and a collaborative leadership style.

This role offers the opportunity to shape the next generation of Opengear’s network resilience products through challenging, end‑to‑end software and firmware development across our solution stack — from embedded firmware and Linux kernel drivers to web‑based interfaces and centralized management platforms. You’ll be part of a collaborative work environment with a strong engineering culture, while also gaining leadership opportunities such as mentoring junior engineers and influencing product architecture and technical direction. In addition, the position provides a competitive salary, comprehensive benefits package, and significant career growth potential in a high‑demand technology sector.

What You Will Do

Lead design and validation of complex electronic systems, including chip‑down ARM and x86 SoCs, network switches, high speed interfaces.

Review and provide guidance on schematics, PCB layouts, component selection and system design for reliability, compliance and cost optimization.

Technically guide board bring‑up, validation, signal integrity analysis and pre‑compliance activities.

Customer‑focused solution collaboration

With firmware and mechanical team members to ensure seamless integration and synergies.

With software engineering and architecture to ensure alignment and overall optimization.

With product management on technical feasibility and design trade‑offs.

With engineering management on complexity estimates, work breakdowns, milestones and risk burndown.

Strategic and operational involvement

Support and lead root‑cause analysis for hardware issues from initial prototypes through production.

Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, tools and documentation practices.

Provide valuable input into risk assessment, regulatory certification planning and supply chain resilience evaluations.

Serve as technical mentor to other members of the hardware team.

Identify and advocate for professional development opportunities alongside engineering management.

Guide innovations to alignment with strategic direction, outline design trade‑offs especially around cost/time and modularity/complexity.

Who You Are and What You Bring

10+ years of industry experience in electronics design.

Proven track record of delivering production‑grade hardware from concept through manufacturing.

Expertise in digital circuit design, high‑speed interfaces and power supply design.

Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a focus on documentation suitable for an intended audience.

Ability to lead by example and inspire excellence through challenges and complexity.

Experience with Altium Designer (preferred) or similar schematic capture and layout tools.

Strong understanding of DFM, DFT, signal integrity, power network analysis, thermal and EMI/EMC considerations.

Desired But Not Required Experience with FPGAs, cellular modules or RF systems.

Experience with regulatory compliance testing, EMC design best‑practices and troubleshooting.

Experience with embedded Linux platforms and board‑level debugging.

Experience with collaborative and reusable design and review workflows.

Experience with simulations for thermal, power network, signal integrity, EMC and/or RF.
