Brief Posting Description The P BS DISTRIBUTION PLANNING Department of the P DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM PLANNING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 2 Management vacancies available. (Role: Professional) This posting seeks to fill at either the Engineer I or Engineer II; whichever level is most suited to the qualifications of the applying candidate.

Engineer I Job Function Evaluates and recommends solutions and alternatives for the safe, reliable, and orderly development and enhancement of Hawaii’s distribution system. Independently performs planning studies and analyses for system integration of new customer loads, distribution energy resources (DER) and transmission and distribution (T&D) equipment.

Essential Functions

Traditional Distribution Planning

Forecast and analysis of distribution substation transformer and circuit loadings to meet planning criteria.

Develop solutions and alternatives for solving normal and emergency overloads and abnormal voltage conditions.

Develop single-line diagrams for solution requirements.

Review and recommend circuit and infrastructure requirements for large customers and subdivisions.

Distribution Energy Resources (DER) Integration

Performs technical reviews and interconnection studies for DER and utility‑scale generation connecting to the distribution system. Develops planning single‑line diagram for Company interconnection requirements.

As part of the Company’s Integrated Grid Planning process, analyze potential DER grid services to solve distribution grid needs. Conducts distribution non‑wires alternative analysis related to capital deferral of traditional wires projects.

Distribution Technical Support

Conducts studies for planning projects and prepares reports and presentations to upper management, the Public Utilities Commission, Consumer Advocate, and other stakeholders.

Participates in various committees, task forces, and special projects which require knowledge of the distribution system.

Utility Acumen & Knowledge

Investigates or researches practices of other utilities, IEEE standards, and the general power industry. Keeps abreast of political, regulatory, and technical changes, innovations, and progress related to functional area.

Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

Basic Qualifications Knowledge Requirements

Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent. Emphasis in the field of Power System Analysis is highly desirable.

Technical knowledge of principles of electrical engineering in the field of power system analysis including load flows, power quality, reliability, voltage drop, losses, and short circuit analysis.

Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications such as: micro‑station, spreadsheets, word processing, etc.

Skills Requirements

Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work with a variety of individuals occasionally dealing with sensitive, difficult, or confrontational issues while using tact, courtesy, and discretion.

In-depth analytical, organizational, and conceptual skills to handle various projects and programs.

Ability to remain flexible and handle multiple projects in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.

Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills.

Experience Requirements

1-2 years of engineering work experience in planning, operations, or design is desirable.

Ability to remain flexible and handle multiple projects in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.

Strong interpersonal skills to influence and persuade various groups or individuals.

Experience Requirements

Multiple (5-7) years of electric utility experience in power system planning, operations, protection, or design.

Professional Engineer Registration in the State of Hawaii, Electrical Engineering required to demonstrate competency and credibility in planning HECO’s electrical distribution system.

Highly Desirable

Working knowledge and experience in T&D design and/or operations.

Hiring Range The hiring range for the Engineer I [Req ID 10099] position is $78,000.00 to $99,600.00. The hiring range for the Engineer II [Req ID 10099] position is $97,900.00 to $125,000.00. The person selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications.
