Flagship Pioneering
Flagship Pioneering | Cambridge, MA Director, Business Development
Flagship Pioneering, Cambridge, Massachusetts, us, 02140
Flagship Pioneering is a biotechnology company that invents and builds platform companies that change the world. We bring together the greatest scientific minds with entrepreneurial company builders and assemble the capital to allow them to take courageous leaps. Those big leaps in human health and sustainability exponentially accelerate scientific progress in areas ranging from cancer detection and treatment to nature-positive agriculture.
What sets Flagship apart is our ability to advance biotechnology by uniting life science innovation, company creation, and capital investment under one roof in a way that is largely without precedent. Our scientific founders, entrepreneurial leaders, and professional capital managers are each aligned around an institutionalized process that enables us to innovate and transform for the benefit of people and planet.
Many of the companies Flagship has founded have addressed humanity’s most urgent challenges: vaccinating billions of people against COVID-19, curing intractable diseases, improving human health, preempting illness, and feeding the world by improving the resiliency and sustainability of agriculture.
Flagship has been recognized twice on FORTUNE’s “Change the World” list, an annual ranking of companies that have made a positive social and environmental impact through activities that are part of their core business strategies, and has been twice named to Fast Company’s annual list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies.
About the role We are seeking a strong Business Development Leader to drive the closing of valuable business development deals between our platform companies and Pharma. Over the last five years, investment in a centralized new medicines development and partnering function has positioned Flagship as the leading supplier of innovation for the biopharmaceutical industry. In this role, you will be critical in driving broad, institutional partnerships directly between Flagship and Biopharmaceutical companies. These types of partnerships are designed to generate portfolios of medicines from our ecosystem bioplatform companies. You will own the articulation of Flagship Pioneering’s value proposition as an institutional partner, leverage personal and established Flagship relationships with pharma through a variety of channels and participate in the deal design and structuring of the resulting partnership.
In this role you will communicate science across vast areas of biology, craft business plans and structures and align with senior leaders. Relationship building within Flagship and with pharma will be critical to aligning Flagship, our companies and potential biopharmacoleagues to partnership that break the mold of traditional deal making. Ultimately, as a successful leader you will bring a passion for building meaningful, value-creating collaborations married to excellence in execution.
Responsibilities
Own management of the institutional supply chain BD workstreams in terms of articulating the value proposition, deepening relationships with potential partners and driving towards an aligned scientific and business cooperation.
Work closely with FSP leadership on the evolution and articulation of the ISC partnering strategy and execution. Own the Future ISC Partnership Internal Planning meeting to evolve current message and deal constructs with the input of a cross‑functional team of FSP discipline leaders.
Characterize potential partners, their strategies and leadership affinity toward scientific and business areas of joint interest. Drive FSP’s understanding of their organization, structure and priorities.
Develop and leverage an account‑management perspective toward deepening pharma relationships.
Run and host Flagship level pharma events at the business and relationship‑building level.
Develop deep understanding of ecosystem companies and their potential contribution to areas of interest of potential partners. Cultivate company relationships to enhance collaboration with FSP in the evolution of the ISC partnering model.
Anticipate the needs of various selling projects and build workstreams to create value as opportunities emerge. Build skillsets to supplement the core capabilities within Flagship needed during this very exploratory selling process.
Qualifications
Minimum 10‑15 years of industry experience, depending on level, with a demonstrated track record of scientific and corporate strategy leadership and execution of cross‑functional initiatives. More experienced candidates to derive greater ownership of FSP leadership and external‑facing aspects of role.
An advanced degree (PhD, MD) is strongly preferred. MBA is a plus. Company building or consulting experience a plus.
Previous leadership experience required, including an enterprise leadership mindset across disciplines, lines and organizational boundaries. Importantly, the ability to derive energy from leading teams at all levels including peers and senior leaders, ensuring communication and managing complex workstreams both internally and externally with impeccable execution.
Ability to understand complex scientific ideas and effectively communicate their value proposition to key internal and external stakeholders.
Prior experience developing or partnering various types of biotechnology platforms or therapeutic modalities (e.g., small molecule, RNA, protein biologic), especially with discovery and preclinical‑stage (Series A and B) companies.
Exposure and experience in directly driving business‑development deals plus. A passion for exploring novel collaboration and funding structures.
Excellent presentation and communication skills—the ability to compellingly articulate, influence, and work successfully—independently and as a team—with varied audiences.
Flagship Pioneering and our ecosystem companies are committed to
equal employment opportunity
regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity or Veteran status.
At Flagship, we recognize there is no perfect candidate. If you have some of the experience listed above but not all, please apply anyway. Experience comes in many forms, skills are transferable, and passion goes a long way. We are dedicated to building diverse and inclusive teams and look forward to learning more about your unique background.
