Salary The pay for this position is $52.42 to $62.00 per hour and is DOE.
Alaska Power & Telephone is seeking a dedicated and experienced Power Plant Superintendent to lead operations in Skagway, Alaska. This full‑time position offers the opportunity to take on a leadership position in a fast‑paced, hands‑on environment while enjoying life in one of the state’s most scenic communities.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Develop and implement budgets for special projects and daily operations
Develop and adhere to the daily Power Operations Plan and Dispatch order
Operate and maintain the power generation and facilities in Skagway, Haines, Gustavus & Lena Point that consist of 8 hydroelectric generators and 17 diesel generators including telecom gensets
Participate in an on‑call rotation and respond to power related emergencies
Maintain operational logs and maintenance logs
Supervise power plant personnel and contractors
Develop and maintain a 5‑year operations plan
Continually improve operational efficiencies & facilities
Oversee the maintenance of company facilities as needed such as snow plowing and repairs
Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment listed above remotely or traveling to location as needed
Education and Experience Required
High school diploma or equivalent
Minimum of 5 years in management or supervisory role
At least 2 years of project management experience
2 years of hands‑on facility maintenance experience
2 years' operating equipment or similar machinery
Candidate Qualifications Required
Valid ADL and CDL licenses preferred
Hazwopper, First Aid/CPR and Forklift Certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire)
Must be able to pass pre‑employment check and drug testing. May be subject to random testing without notice.
Ability to enter a Power Plant Apprentice program through completion
Physical Requirements
At times work will be performed in loud environments requiring hearing protection
At times work will be performed in non‑temperature‑controlled environments
At times work will be performed around rotating equipment
At times work will be performed while sitting, standing, crouching, squatting, and reaching at heights
At times work will be performed in a standard office environment with regularly scheduled working hours
Must be capable of safely lifting up to 70 pounds on occasion, maintaining good balance
Must be capable of moving 55‑gallon drums of oil
Safety and PPE must be worn at all times when performing work in the field
Occasional travel may be required by small planes, ferry, helicopter, boats, and/or ATV
Overtime may be required
Benefits The pay for this position is $52.42 to $62.00 per hour and is DOE.
