Under general supervision, the position supports science courses by setting up labs, setting up equipment, preparing specimens and other lab materials. The position is responsible for maintaining all lab equipment, materials, supply levels, and for ensuring lab materials are functional, stored and disposed of hazardous waste materials. This is a temporary position, limited to a maximum of 165 working days within a fiscal year.

Duties and Responsibilities

Prepares various solutions for laboratory activities;

Assembles new equipment and installs them in the appropriate laboratory;

Prepares equipment and materials for biology, microbiology, chemistry, anatomy, biotechnology, physics, engineering, engineering technology, and physiology laboratory demonstrations and exercises;

Prepares aqueous and non‑aqueous reagents;

Prepares mammalian and bacterial cell cultures aseptically;

Freezes specimens and materials to store as appropriate;

Dispenses proper quantities of materials;

Monitors the use and cleanliness of lab equipment and materials to ensure safety of students;

Stores hazardous waste materials, chemicals, and specimens;

Arranges for appropriate disposal of bio‑hazardous waste and hazardous waste materials;

Performs minor repairs including necessary calibrations to apparatuses and equipment;

Enters data into various records and reports such as hazardous waste reports, chemical inventories, logbooks, preparation sheets, and other documents related to laboratory operations and activities;

Contacts vendors to resolve issues and discrepancies with equipment;

Conducts inventory of lab equipment, supplies, and materials to ensure adequate stock levels;

Provides lead direction to unclassified staff by developing work schedules and assigning duties;

Assists with inputting and providing budget management support and monitors the local lab budget to ensure availability of funds for the whole academic year;

Works with faculty to guide/make recommendations for safe laboratory activities;

Demonstrates sensitivity to and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the College’s students, faculty, staff and community;

Effectively engages and supports historically disproportionately impacted groups by addressing issues of equity and improving culturally responsive service‑oriented practices.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge

Common science laboratory equipment such as microscopes, Bunsen burners, scales, test tubes, beakers, and flasks.

Common science laboratory specimens and chemicals used in biology, microbiology, chemistry, anatomy, biotechnology, physics, engineering, engineering technology, and physiology laboratories.

Proper procedures for handling and disposing of hazardous waste.

Methods of storing chemicals and specimens.

General office software and equipment.

Skill

Proficiency in operating common science laboratory equipment and managing specimens and chemicals.

Knowledge of proper procedures for handling and disposing of hazardous waste.

Ability to store chemicals and specimens safely.

Competence with general office software and equipment.

Ability

Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of safety methods for handling and storing hazardous material and equipment.

Ensure safety and conditions of laboratory materials.

Perceive color in chemical solutions.

Maintain laboratory environment in a safe and orderly condition.

Effectively maintain equipment in proper working order.

Maintain records related to work performed and inventory.

Effectively ensure that all interactions with students and staff exhibit sensitivity and understanding of diverse backgrounds.

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with district staff, students, and stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications Any combination equivalent to: a bachelor’s degree with coursework in science, chemistry, biology, physics or a related field, AND two years of laboratory experience, AND evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students as these factors relate to the need for equity‑minded practices.

Physical Demands Work in a standard office setting, including standing, sitting, stooping, bending, kneeling, twisting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling light and moderate amounts of weight, operating office equipment, and communicating in written and verbal forms. Vision and hearing must be normal (with or without correction). The position requires safe handling of lab equipment and supplies, including objects of substantial weight and size.
