Opportunities for lateral movement and training for specialty assignments include: ALERT Team (Riot Control), Crime Analysis, Detectives, Field Training Officers, Firearms Instructors and Armorers, Hostage Negotiation Team, Narcotic K-9 Officer, School Resource Officers, SWAT, and Traffic and Motors Officer.

Patrol officers work fourteen 12-hour shifts every other week, with a 3-day weekend. Shifts are day or night within a 28-day cycle.

General Responsibilities

  • Perform patrol duties conscientiously, proficiently, and independently, including special assignments when assigned.
  • Recognize the importance of law enforcement activities and treat all citizens with tact and courtesy.
  • Manage assigned police vehicles and equipment responsibly.
  • Act without supervision in emergencies, exercising judgment and discretion.
  • Perform criminal investigations with considerable judgment, including case analysis, law interpretation, and court case preparation.
  • Follow departmental policies and procedures, referring deviations to higher command.
  • Engage in specialized law enforcement activities such as investigations, surveillance, juvenile matters, etc., requiring specialized training.
  • Performance is reviewed regularly through supervision, reports, inspections, and discussions.

Minimum Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency.
  • At least 21 years old by certification date.
  • High school diploma; Associate degree in Law Enforcement preferred.
  • Complete medical exam and drug screening.
  • Valid Washington Driver's License and a clean driving record.
  • No criminal record involving moral character violations or illegal drug use.
  • Successful completion of oral, psychological, and polygraph tests.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a Basic Law Enforcement School Certificate from the Washington Criminal Justice Training Commission.
  • Ability to complete field training successfully.

Recruitment Process

An application with the City of Bothell is not required now. Complete the required testing at Public Safety Testing and share your scores with the City. You will be notified if invited for the next steps.
