Overview
In 1971, Yale University established Yale Health to provide health services to its faculty, staff and students through a multidisciplinary health maintenance organization located on campus.
Today, Yale Health serves more than 49,000 members including students, staff, faculty and their families from across the country and around the world.
The 55 Lock Street facility is a 144,000 square foot multispecialty medical center with over 90 exam rooms, an acute care department, a 15‑bed inpatient unit with two negative pressure rooms, a diagnostic imaging suite (MR and CT), an endoscopy suite, and a full‑service retail pharmacy. Comprehensive behavioral health, care management, clinical pharmacy and population health teams also support our patients.
As part of a physician‑led health maintenance organization embedded within Yale University, our physicians and advanced practice providers work free from fee‑for‑service pressures and volume‑driven targets, allowing them to focus entirely on patient welfare. In the Yale Health Department of Ob/Gyn, physicians provide high‑quality, seamless, coordinated and compassionate care across all patient encounters, including outpatient, inpatient, and emergency services. They oversee labor and delivery, perform gynecologic surgery at Yale New Haven Hospital, and collaborate with nurses, medical assistants, and other front‑line staff. Each physician has an individual panel of patients and is available as backup for colleagues’ patients, handling walk‑in and call‑in patients as needed. They also participate in departmental meetings, quality improvement projects, and education of Yale Ob/Gyn residents and medical students, and may pursue academic appointments within the Yale School of Medicine. Call duty averages 1:6 to 1:7, with a full post‑call day off.
