Reporting to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), the VP Patient Care – BUMC Surgery oversees, plans, and directs nursing practice and clinical services for Baylor Scott and White Health (BSWH). This position provides clinical leadership across all patient care settings, both inpatient and outpatient, within the assigned area of responsibility, which may include one or more hospitals, clinics, or other BSWH healthcare facilities.
Job Summary As VP Patient Care, you will be responsible for developing and implementing clinical protocols, nursing policies, and procedures, new patient care models, and nursing quality improvement initiatives. You will maintain and monitor clinical operational efficiency, ensure high-quality patient care delivery in a cost-effective manner, and collaborate with operations and physician leadership to achieve service excellence. The role supports perioperative & surgical services and other areas as assigned, ensuring patient outcomes, experience, and service quality remain top priorities.
Essential Functions
Oversee clinical patient care services for BSWH Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC).
Develop and implement short- and long‑range nursing plans and priorities aligned with BSWH mission, values, and business objectives.
Advises and collaborates with clinical departments, medical staff, and other leadership on nursing activities and decisions that impact the quality of patient care, patient safety, and patient satisfaction.
Create and lead a nursing environment that promotes a collaborative nursing practice and excellence in patient care, patient safety, nursing education, and clinical research.
Lead the development and implementation of nursing policies, programs, and initiatives and ensure consistency in standards of nursing practice across all clinical settings.
Evaluate current nursing practices and patient care delivery models to continually improve the quality, appropriateness, and efficiency of patient care.
Promote and facilitate a multidisciplinary approach to patient care and coordination of care among clinical disciplines.
Lead the development and implementation of clinical quality and patient safety initiatives, programs, and activities.
Develop and implement quality and utilization standards for patient care services to ensure coordinated plans of treatment and efficient, cost‑effective patient care.
Ensure nursing services are compliant with all applicable laws and regulatory requirements, including the Joint Commission.
Key Success Factors
Bachelor’s degree in nursing or related field required; Master’s or DNP strongly preferred.
5+ years of nursing experience in an acute care environment.
1+ year of experience in a leadership role.
Registered Nurse license required.
Experience collaborating across multiple departments and clinical disciplines within a large, complex health‑care organization preferred.
Excellent problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills, with strong presentation skills.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s or DNP strongly preferred.
5 years of experience.
Registered Nurse license.
