Job Description
The Veterans Center Coordinator serves as a key advocate and resource for military-connected students, including veterans, active‑duty service members, reservists, and dependents. This position will serve as the secondary School Certifying Official for the University of Missouri St. Louis and is part of the Veterans Center team, reporting to the Veterans Center Manager. This role will coordinate support services and engage with campus partners to increase the enrollment, engagement, and retention of military connected students.
Shift This position is an on‑campus position and will follow regular campus business hours of 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, with weekend and evening hours a few times across the year.
Responsibilities School Certifying Official (45%)
Serve as a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) School Certifying Official (SCO)
Advise students on eligibility, application processes, and maintenance of military education benefits
Maintain appropriate certification records and submit supporting documents in accordance with VA regulations, VA State Approving Agency Standards (SAA), and University policies
Certify verification of enrollment for GI Bill®, Federal Tuition Assistance, and State Tuition Assistance Educational Benefits using required (Veterans Affairs/Fed TA/State TA) processes
Assist student file maintenance for required VA Compliance review and submission of annual program and catalog updates to the State Approving Agency
Stay current with federal updates and attend required SCO training sessions
Student Support and Engagement (35%)
Serve as the primary point of contact for military‑connected students seeking assistance with academic, personal, or benefits‑related concerns, providing timely and compassionate support
Respond to walk‑in, phone, and email inquiries from students, faculty, staff, and community members regarding veteran services, VA benefits, and campus resources
Provide support and consultation to academic advisors and faculty to facilitate military student success
Maintain a visible and approachable presence in the Veterans Center and at campus events, fostering trust and building relationships with students
Triage and refer students to appropriate campus or community resources for health/mental health, financial aid, academic support, or other needs
Participate in campus outreach events, including open houses, orientation sessions, and community engagement activities
Assist with dissemination of informational materials and presentations to promote services and resources available to military‑connected students
Collaborate with Admissions and Enrollment Services to ensure a smooth onboarding experience for incoming students using VA benefits
Administrative (20%)
Oversee VA Work‑Study program and supervise student staff, including managing contracts, approvals, and timesheets, while providing mentorship, leadership development, and day‑to‑day guidance to ensure a supportive and professional learning environment
Maintain records, data, and reports related to student engagement and center usage
Remain knowledgeable about proposed and enacted federal legislation which affects veterans’ educational programs by maintaining membership in professional organizations and participating in national and regional conferences

Minimum Qualifications A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supervising individual employees or leading small teams
Experience with processing military tuition assistance
Experience working with veterans or their dependents
Salary Range Salary Range: $21.71‑25.00 hourly. Grade: GGS‑009. University Title: Student Service Coordinator II.
