Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Boys & Girls Club of Vista. Kids face many challenges and decisions that will alter the course of their lives—today's choices are more complex and confusing than they seemed to be in the past.
Your commitment to the BGCV is a way to ensure the future of our youth by stepping forward to be there when the community's needs are at their highest level. This information will hopefully assist you in understanding the club’s history and help identify what is expected from our board members. We hope your experience with us will be impactful and create more extraordinary futures.
The Governance Committee nominates board members with input from the CEO. A board member has a 3-year term with the possibility of an extension from both parties. BGCV engages in comprehensive efforts to ensure that the Club attracts and maintains a high level of active, diverse, and enthusiastic volunteer leadership.
The following principles of good practice are provided as a common perspective on the responsibilities of individual BGCV Board of Directors members:
A director knows the BGCV’s mission, vision, goals, and current operations and issues.
Each director has a fiduciary responsibility to the organization for sound financial management.
A director actively supports the BGCV’s mission, vision, and goals.
A director prioritizes the BGCV in their annual charitable giving and contributes time and expertise to the Club’s resource development program.
A director participates actively on at least one committee of the Board. Committee assignments will be determined in individual, annual conversations with the chair of the Governance Committee, considering each Board member’s interests and capabilities and the needs of the BGCV. Current committees include:
a. Executive
b. Governance & Nominating
c. Audit
d. Finance
e. Development
f. Facility & Safety
A director attends meetings well-prepared and participates fully in all matters. Directors are expected to:
a. Attend 8 out of 10 Board meetings per year
b. Participate in regular committee meetings (frequency varies by committee)
c. Attend the annual Board Retreat (typically a Friday in August)
d. Participate actively in and/or contribute to all major fundraising events during the year
e. Participate in other meetings as required (such as sub-committee meetings for fundraising events)
f. Complete the annual background check and all required safety training as mandated by BGCV and Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
