Job Summary The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non‑profit, bipartisan public‑policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of about 250 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security worldwide.
CSIS is seeking a Deputy Director and Senior Fellow or Fellow to lead the newly established Center for the Industrial Base (CIB). This individual will play a leadership role in advancing the program’s research priorities, focusing on national and international industrial‑base issues and their impact on U.S. national security. The CIB provides research on how the United States and its allies can collaborate more effectively with industry and build their industrial bases, with core areas of focus including:
Department of Defense and federal industrial‑base challenges
Government contracting trends in defense, civilian agencies, and international markets
Industry‑government collaboration
International industrial cooperation
This person will report directly to the Director of the Center for the Industrial Base. The salary band for this role is $125,000‑$200,000, commensurate with experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provides thought leadership and strategic guidance.
Leads individual and collaborative research projects that advance critical issues related to the defense industrial base and assesses the efficacy of research initiatives.
Works closely with the Director to identify funding opportunities, engage potential research sponsors, conduct business development, manage project budgets, oversee grants and contracts, prepare reports, develop proposals, and secure new or follow‑on funding.
Conveners of expert groups in private and public fora, and participates in workshops, international exchanges, and conferences.
Manages and coordinates day‑to‑day workflow of the CIB in consultation with the Director.
Possesses strong communication skills and can effectively present quantitative and/or qualitative information to sponsors, media, government entities, and the public.
Collaborates with other CSIS departments on joint planning, business development, and research projects on cross‑cutting topics.
Provides close supervision and active mentoring of associate and junior staff.
Knowledge, Education, and Experience
M.A./M.S. required; Ph.D. encouraged.
At least 7 years of professional experience in national security.
Strong experience managing personnel, projects, budgets, and grants.
Substantive research experience on national‑security topics such as acquisition, budgets, the defense industrial base, resilient supply chains, international industrial cooperation, and emerging technology.
Superior writing, editing, and analytical skills.
Technical proficiency with statistical and database tools (e.g., R, SQL, Microsoft Excel) or experience overseeing quantitative analysis.
Demonstrated ability to plan, execute, and lead complex events and/or conferences.
Strong communication and convening skills.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to interact with and respond to a diverse range of stakeholders.
Strong interpersonal skills and success working in highly collaborative, team‑based environments.
Sound judgment, impeccable integrity, positive attitude, and creative outlook.
