UCCE Area Director (Sacramento, Solano & Yolo Counties) - Sacramento, CA
University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources seeks a UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Area Director to lead and coordinate applied research and outreach programs in the Capitol Corridor Multi‑County Partnership (Sacramento, Solano, Yolo Counties). The role supports:
Sustainable, safe, and nutritious food production and delivery
Economic success in the local and global economy
A sustainable, healthy, and productive environment
Science literacy and youth development
Purpose:
The Area Director will collaborate with county governments in Sacramento, Solano, and Yolo Counties to manage UCCE programs, secure funding, and build partnerships.
High‑Level Responsibilities:
Act as liaison with Boards of Supervisors and County Administrative Officers, chairing the UCCE Capitol Corridor MCP Advisory Council and holding meetings twice a year.
Secure county budgets and resources to expand UCCE presence.
Build relationships and deploy UCCE research to address regional needs.
Oversee and administer UCCE educational and applied research programs, including hiring, managing, and evaluating staff.
Maintain positive working relationships with public and private agencies and partner organizations.
Expand collaborations and funding sources.
Ensure compliance with University of California and county policies.
Support and grow partnerships across city and county government departments, resource districts, industry organizations, and non‑profits.
Key Responsibilities
Administration of Cooperative Extension Unit (25%):
Provide leadership to staff, ensuring assessment of client needs.
Develop and support program implementation and outcomes measurement.
Ensure compliance with UC and county policy.
Make timely decisions and achieve optimal results.
Oversight of educational extension and applied research.
Recruit, retain, and evaluate advisors and staff.
Leadership to Cooperative Extension Unit Team Members (25%):
Demonstrate visionary, inspiring leadership and foster innovation.
Support staff through mentoring, evaluation, and promotion.
Maintain effective communication within the University and county government.
Promote affirmative action and inclusive culture.
Develop regional models of applied research and education.
Fiscal Development & Management (25%):
Secure and manage resources, monitor usage, and report to funding agencies.
Collaborate with development officers to increase donor base.
Partnerships and Relationships (25%):
Cultivate internal UC, political, and industry relationships.
Represent UC as contact for industry leaders, producers, and the public.
Advocate for UC ANR programs and collaborate with government affairs staff.
Convene advisory committees and build ongoing partnerships.
Requirements:
Advanced degree in public administration, business administration, or related field or equivalent experience.
Strong background in management, administration, budgeting, human resources, conflict resolution, leadership, project management, facilities planning.
Experience with applied research and educational programs, working with academics.
Knowledge of volunteer and youth programs.
Understanding of UC ANR mission.
Demonstrated leadership, strategic planning, and supervisory skills.
Communication and team‑building abilities.
Fidelity in budgeting and fiscal management.
Preferred Skills:
Doctorate degree.
Knowledge of agriculture, natural resources, healthy families and communities, Cooperative Extension, academic programs.
Special Conditions of Employment:
Valid California driver’s license and clean record for county or university vehicle operation.
Travel reimbursement per University policies.
Must reside within commuting distance of the headquarters (Woodland, Yolo County or Sacramento).
Work in all three counties for at least three full days each month plus one day per week in each county.
Background check required; may require fingerprinting.
Smoke‑free environment; no use of nicotine products.
Compliance with University of California vaccination program policy.
Discretion in managing sensitive information, adherence to data protection and privacy laws.
Disclosure of misconduct as per university policy.
Pay Scale:
$111,000.00/year to $162,700.00/year.
Benefits:
Comprehensive benefits including vacation, sick leave, and approximately thirteen paid holidays per year.
Location Headquarters:
