Job Summary
The Certified Phlebotomy Technician is responsible for performing phlebotomy, specimen processing, micro plating, and assisting the Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in the laboratory. The role requires professional application of laboratory principles, theories, and techniques of phlebotomy and specimen processing. Reporting to the lead laboratory assistant, laboratory manager/supervisor, and/or the administrative director of Laboratory services, the technician actively and consistently contributes to department operations and communications, upholding standards of AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank you) patient communication.

Essential Functions (6 Months of Acute Experience Required)
Follows the hospital’s policies and procedures and documents their review.
Demonstrates ability to draw blood on all age groups, following each step of the laboratory procedure and antiseptic techniques.
Troubleshoots problems, documents specimen rejection, prepares send‑out specimens, and performs billing procedures.
Orients and trains new staff.
Explains collection procedures to patients.
Assists the CLS in the lab by centrifuging, organizing the specimens, placing specimens on the instruments to initiate a test run, making smears, plating micro, maintaining the instruments, and doing inventory.
Uses clear, concise, professional communication with coworkers, patients, all customers internal and external.
Uses AIDET in interactions with patients and family members. Utilizes white boards for patient communication.
Collaborates across disciplines to assist in coordination of patient care, including but not limited to patient transfer, discharge, referrals, and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.
Acts with a sense of urgency when performing tasks.
Basic unit/department maintenance such as keeping files, drawers, cabinets free from unnecessary clutter.
Reports any equipment or environmental issues for repair.
Abides by HIPAA regulations.
Utilizes SBAR when communicating with oncoming shift, physician communication and giving report to ancillary or other nursing services.
Speaks up to stop the line and escalates potential safety events if necessary.
Completes and attends monthly training assigned.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Experience
A minimum of six (6) months phlebotomy experience in an accredited hospital clinical laboratory.
Experience working with laboratory instrumentation is preferred.
Critical thinking, service excellence and good interpersonal communication skills, ability to read/comprehend written instructions, strong organizational skills, ability to follow verbal instructions, and PC (computer) skills.
A capacity to learn, synthesize, make critical judgments, work independently, place patients and families first, and collaborate with the team members who are recognized leaders within health care.
