The incumbent in this position is responsible for operating various heavy equipment such as a motor grader, backhoe, and bulldozer that are used to maintain roads and drainage systems within the county. This position reports to a Supervisor and/or a Foreman.
Work is performed outdoors, occasionally in inclement weather. The incumbent is exposed to noise, dirt, dust, and machinery.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid commercial driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the class of vehicle or equipment operated.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Operates motor grader used in maintenance of county roads and in the grading of building sites and ball fields, etc.
Operates backhoe, pan, and bulldozer used in redistributing dirt.
Spreads asphalt for paving and patching of roadways.
Performs maintenance on equipment including changing blades, tires, oil, filters, etc.
Maintains driveways located within the county right-of-way.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of county policies and procedures pertaining to road maintenance and improvement.
Knowledge of achieving grade, drainage, and proper compaction.
Skill in operating heavy equipment such as motor grader, front end loader, pan, bulldozer and backhoe.
Skill in dealing with the public.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship of having a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid commercial driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the class of vehicle or equipment operated.
A combination of education and/or work experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
