Overview

This position is responsible for the physical maintenance and care of restoration and conservation sites in rural and wildland environments. The role involves hands-on fieldwork including vegetation management, invasive species removal, site preparation, and ongoing maintenance activities to support habitat restoration projects. Daily tasks include manual labor using hand tools and equipment to support habitat restoration, maintain healthy ecosystems, and ensure the success of conservation efforts on rural properties.

Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in the implementation and maintenance of habitat restoration projects, including but not limited to tree/shrub plantings, irrigation, invasive weed management, and herbivory control.
  • Direct and work with labor crews, including temporary labor staff, in the field to complete tasks.
  • Assist in the collection and reporting of various monitoring requirements.
  • Occasionally operate small equipment (e.g., tractors, bobcats, loaders, and backhoes) for seeding and other specialized restoration projects (e.g., wetland construction, test plots).
  • Install, operate, and maintain various irrigation systems, including both manual and automated systems.
  • Maintain, repair and organize tools, vehicles and other equipment; ensure that work-related equipment and tools are in good, safe condition.
  • Conduct extensive weed abatement in upland and wetland environments using weed-eaters, herbicides (via backpack sprayers and ATV), and manual methods.
  • Clearly communicate with supervisor on status of projects, including staffing and equipment needs, schedules, potential constraints, etc.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with co-workers, company employees, and external customers.
  • Work extensively for long periods of time on various site conditions; work safely in rough terrain, inclement weather, and other environmental situations.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Experience & Industry: Minimum 2 years’ experience conducting habitat restoration projects, including implementation and maintenance activities.
  • Pre-employment requirements: Successful completion of a pre-employment drug, alcohol, and background investigation.
  • Driver and licensing: Valid Driver’s License; valid CA driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Safety and training: Current on all company required safety training.
  • Confidentiality and policies: Ability to preserve confidential and proprietary information and successfully avoid conflicts-of-interest; knowledge of Standard Operating Policies and Procedures.
  • Punctuality and availability: Ability to consistently appear for work on time; ability to work authorized overtime as required.
  • Independence and supervision: Demonstrated ability to work independently and supervise others.
  • Physical requirements: Possess the strength and agility to perform maintenance work in outdoor settings for long periods.
  • Pesticide certification: Possession of or ability to obtain Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate within one year of hire; general knowledge of local flora and weed species.

  • Job sites include uneven ground, steep slopes, exposure to extreme temperature and/or humidity. Frequent bending and squatting; carrying loads of 30-40 pounds for extended periods, with occasional lifting of heavy loads up to 90 pounds. Frequently works alone in remote areas. Occasional overtime and overnight stays.

Compensation

Hourly Base Salary Range: $25.20 - $28.80. The range reflects what the company reasonably expects to pay; actual base salary may vary by role, location, education, training, or experience.
