Job Summary: Responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the pharmacy department and is accountable for workflow management, clinical management of patients, continuous quality improvement, adherence to policy and procedure, compliance with internal and external regulatory bodies, pharmacy sales, expense control and inventory management, and image through the accurate filling of prescriptions, ensuring the highest level of customer service to patients, providers, and payer partners, and developing and protecting department assets.
Job Responsibilities
Ensures department personnel provide hospitable service and information; courteous, friendly, and efficient.
Responds to customer inquiries and complaints, maintaining and improving overall image of the pharmacy department.
Manages the daily operation of the pharmacy department, improving prescription numbers, pharmacy sales, profit, and image through accurate prescription filling and courteous customer service to patients, prescribers, manufacturers, payers, and health systems.
Reports prescription errors promptly, adhering to company policies and the Quality Improvement Program.
Complies with all federal and state laws and regulations and company policies governing drugs and products; maintains required records and reports.
Recommends and implements asset protection controls and procedures to minimize profit loss.
Maintains pharmacy department housekeeping, maintenance, and appearance for safety, health, and well‑being of customers and employees.
Controls safe storage and “bank” functions: electronic register readings, cash withdrawals, cash accounts, daily cash reports, cash over and short records, and other cash management reports.
Ensures proper operation and maintenance of pharmacy department systems and equipment.
Manages third‑party pharmacy business opportunities and processes, resolving rejections promptly and resubmitting claims for payment.
Manages and controls prescription department inventory, adhering to buying procedures and ordering merchandise from authorized sources.
People and Performance Management
Supervises pharmacy department team members to ensure performance of required functions and adherence to company policies; confirms proper licensure and training on payer and pharmaceutical contractual requirements.
Reaffirms on a regular basis the obligation to dispense prescriptions in good faith.
Training and Personal Development
Audits own performance, recommending objectives and standards of performance.
Maintains awareness of developments in pharmacy, health care, and retail management fields, integrating them into practice.
Communications
Maintains and develops good working relationships with physicians and other health professionals, collaborating closely with Local Specialty Pharmacy staff.
Basic Qualifications
BS in Pharmacy or Pharm D Degree from an accredited institution.
Current pharmacist license in the required states (or willingness to obtain within one year).
At least one year of pharmacy experience including prescription filling and verification, records and legal compliance, pharmacy operations, software and technology systems, and insurance.
Demonstrated knowledge of applicable state and federal controlled substance laws.
Completed specialized training or sufficient practical experience in the medication and disease states offered at a specialty clinic (HIV, organ transplant, oncology, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience at a Walgreens Local Specialty Pharmacy.
Exceeds Expectations in the most recent performance review period and Achieving Expectations in the earliest review period.
