Waymo - Data Scientist / Software Engineer, Planner Evaluation
Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver - The World's Most Experienced Driver - to improve access to mobility while saving lives lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can be applied to various vehicle platforms and use cases. It has provided over one million rider trips, driven tens of millions of miles on public roads, and billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states.
The Planner Evaluation team tackles one of the main challenges in autonomous driving: enhancing the quality of the onboard software that controls the vehicle. We seek experienced data-minded software engineers and data scientists passionate about using rich, complex data to influence decision-making.
This hybrid role reports to an Engineering Manager and involves:
Developing signals to measure performance and driving qualities using statistics, math, physics, algorithms, and machine learning.
Using simulation and real-world driving logs to assess driving performance.
Designing methods to connect onboard software changes with simulation outcomes.
Championing code health and best practices in a complex codebase.
Analyzing data to improve metric quality and interpretability.
Qualifications include:
BS in Computer Science, Robotics, Statistics, Physics, Math, or related quantitative field.
At least 2 years of experience with:
Navigating and modifying large code bases in languages like C++, Python, and SQL.
Performing statistical analyses.
Building data processing pipelines.
Writing, reviewing, and maintaining code according to industry standards.
Preferred qualifications include experience with:
C++ programming.
A/B testing infrastructure.
Building and validating metrics for complex systems.
Ad-hoc data analysis tools for rapid prototyping.
Experience in the AV industry.
Salary range for this full-time position in the US is $170,000 to $216,000 USD, with additional benefits, bonuses, and equity, depending on experience and location.
