Assistant Professor of Inorganic/Materials Chemistry
Location:
Williamstown, MA
Open Date:
Jul 24, 2025
Job Description The Williams College Chemistry Department invites applications for a tenure‑track position at the assistant professor level, beginning in July 2026. We aim to enrich our intellectual community with a dynamic research program in inorganic or materials chemistry that actively engages undergraduate students and demonstrates a strong commitment to teaching, mentoring, and service. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds and encourage applicants whose experiences and perspectives enhance our commitment to academic excellence and innovation.
Successful candidates will develop an experimental research program in inorganic or materials chemistry, broadly defined, that involves undergraduate research. They will be expected to teach courses in materials and inorganic chemistry, participate in the teaching rotation for general introductory chemistry, instrumental methods of analysis, and potentially a non‑science‑major or upper‑level elective not currently offered. The standard teaching load includes one lecture and two laboratory sections per semester, along with supervision of student research projects, and a requirement to participate meaningfully in the Winter Study curriculum during January.
Responsibilities • Develop a productive experimental research program in inorganic or materials chemistry. • Engage undergraduate students in research projects. • Teach undergraduate courses in materials and inorganic chemistry, and serve on the general chemistry teaching rotation. • Mentor and advise a diverse population of undergraduate students. • Participate in departmental and college‐wide service activities, including the Winter Study curriculum.
Qualifications • Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry, materials chemistry, or a related field required by September 2025. • Postdoctoral experience strongly preferred. • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching, mentoring, and service. • Ability to develop an externally funded research program and contribute to a liberal arts research environment.
Application Instructions All applications must be submitted online through Interfolio at https://apply.interfolio.com/170210. Submit a cover letter addressed to Professor Christopher Goh (Chair, Chemistry Department), a curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching and mentoring philosophy, a research statement, and three letters of recommendation. The research statement should outline your proposed research over the next five years, plans for engaging undergraduates, and strategies for attracting external funding. The teaching statement should describe your motivation for teaching, approach to a positive learning environment, and a brief description of a non‑majors or upper‑level course you would ideally develop.
Applications received by September 1, 2025 will receive full consideration. Campus visits are anticipated in late October and early November 2025. All offers of employment are contingent upon a background check. Further information is available at https://dean-faculty.williams.edu/prospective-faculty/background-check-policy/.
