The Director, Workforce and Business Policy, leads the International Fresh Produce Association's policy and regulatory actions on workforce and labor issues, including immigration reform, transportation, logistics, economic policies, and other business concerns impacting the supply chain for fresh produce. This position serves as policy liaison for IFPA’s floral portfolio. The position requires the ability to develop and take action on public policy priorities, forge consensus with industry and allies, encourage member engagement, and drive association leadership with policymakers.

This critical role is charged with conveying the voice of IFPA members and the fresh industry to elected officials, regulators, and other policy influencers at the federal level, to drive policy decisions that increase prosperity for the fresh sector and aid in our mission of growing a stronger fresh industry and a more influential association.

Position Responsibilities Leads policies and engagement relating to workforce, labor, and immigration.

Recognized as an expert and leader in the workforce-related challenges and opportunities facing food and agriculture, with the ability to translate that understanding to the fresh produce and floral industry.

Represents IFPA on key labor and workforce coalitions and provides leadership within these groups to advance the industry priorities for IFPA members.

Leads policies and engagement relating to transportation and logistics impacting the supply chain.

Recognized as an expert and policy leader on transportation, logistics, and supply chain issues impacting food and agriculture, with the ability to translate that understanding to the fresh produce and floral industry.

Collaborates closely internally with science and technology unit staff to ensure policies and advocacy actions are coordinated and effective.

Leads policies and engagement relating to business operations and economic policies.

Recognized as a policy leader on general business operations issues, e.g., taxes, finance, insurance, and intellectual property, impacting the fresh produce and floral industry.

Collaborates closely internally with the science, technology, and global insights unit, as well as legal advisors, to ensure policies and advocacy actions are coordinated and effective.

Manages government relations activities supporting the Floral portfolio and members.

Recognized as a government relations leader on issues impacting the floral industry.

General Duties

Eligible to register as a federal lobbyist and comply with all federal rules and any requirements to maintain registration in good standing.

Engage with policymakers and regulatory officials to advocate for members and the industry.

Collaborates closely with IFPA staff in other units to best communicate positions and policies to the membership, soliciting their input, support, and efforts as needed.

Participate and lead coalition efforts on given topics that best represent our policy and regulatory goals.

Develop documents, position papers, public comments, and other materials to support IFPA communication and action on these issues.

Develop with the government relations team and the US Council actions and strategies that support annual policy and regulatory goals.

Coordinate and manage the Labor and Business Policy Working Group of the US Council.

Participate in political fundraising events supported by IPFA’s FreshPAC as appropriate and assigned.

Supports the Vice President of Government Relations and the USGR team in the strategic identification of policy concerns and opportunities, and the execution of IFPA’s Public Policy Agenda.

Other related duties as assigned.

Position Information Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Bachelor’s degree

Minimum 5 years of food, agriculture or related industry experience (or combination of equivalent education & experience)

Strong communication and networking skills, including written, verbal, and public speaking.

Ability to manage multiple ongoing projects in a demanding environment and prioritize competing priorities.

Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.

Customer-service-focused, motivated, and positive attitude toward IFPA’s mission.

Ability to lead and interact with association members/customers, including the ability to interact within the industry on their terms and at a conversational level.

Ability to work independently on projects and collaborate internally and externally with allies and stakeholders.

Keen understanding of federal government relations and the U.S. political system.

Previous association management skills, federal government, or Capitol Hill experience preferred.

Proficient in Microsoft Office, Salesforce, and Zoom, with the ability to quickly adapt to using new programs.

Location This position is primarily remote but requires the candidate to be based in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Candidates must be available to routinely commute to IFPA’s D.C. office, federal agencies, and Capitol Hill as needed, including on short notice.

Travel 3-5 trips per year.
