POSITION SUMMARY Under the general supervision of the Transportation Manager, the Jet Boat Captain is responsible for managing and operating a twin inboard jet boat. The Captain provides river ferry transit services, ensures passenger safety and well‑being while on the vessel, and adheres to all United States Coast Guard regulations and company policies. The Captain is expected to navigate the boat vessel in high water, low water, and in a safe manner, and to manage daily vessel efficiency along with its maintenance and upkeep.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Inspect systems to ensure efficient and safe operation of vessels and equipment and conformance to regulations.
Maintain records of daily activities as required and monitor the loading and unloading of cargo and passengers.
Arrange for and participate in boat fueling, stockpiling of supplies, and cleaning as needed.
Provide safe boat operation while maintaining responsibility for the safety of passengers and crew.
Read gauges and perform manual checks to verify sufficient fluid levels prior to operation of the vessel.
Communicate with the transit dispatcher to schedule daily routes and provide regular check‑ins.
Operate a two‑way radio system to dispatch the transit driver and coordinate requests for rides, confirmation, and cancellation of trips.
Behave courteously toward and communicate politely and efficiently with the public and others.
Maintain a tactful relationship with supervisor and co‑workers.
Ensure the maintenance of boats and related support equipment such as engines, navigational systems, docks, boarding ramps, rescue equipment, fire extinguishers, and life preservers.
Be willing to work five days a week, weekends, split shifts, holidays, and in all weather conditions.
Provide exemplary customer‑relation skills while operating the vessel for boat ferry service.
Be safety‑oriented with strong knowledge of USCG regulations and safety procedures.
Command boat vessel in various bodies of water (high tide, low tide, wind).
Measure and record water depths.
Provide service along the planned river route.
Use flashing lights and whistles to signal passing vessels.
Coordinate with crew members or staff performing activities such as loading and unloading cargo, steering vessels, operating engines, and maintaining, repairing ship equipment.
Conduct daily vessel and docking facility inspections.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education / Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field with one year specified experience.
Employee must be willing to acquire any special certifications or attend any training that becomes relevant or required for the position.
Candidates with equivalent combinations of education, training and experience will be considered.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be certified and licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard – Master’s License.
25‑Ton Master or Limited Master License, as authorized by the United States Coast Guard.
Three years’ experience in driving boats on the Klamath River.
Knowledge of Klamath River and river channel.
Must possess a valid commercial driver’s license Class A or be willing to obtain it within three (3) months of hire; must have a clear driving record and provide a Department of Motor Vehicle printout.
Must have excellent public speaking skills; past tour guide experience preferred but not necessary.
First Aid/CPR certification required within 30 days of hire.
Must obtain Swift Water Rescue training within 90 days of hire.
Recognition that to serve Yurok People one must know as much as possible about Yurok history, culture, and values.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Performs the full range of supervisory duties and responsibilities. Plans work of subordinates based on priorities and nature of assignments, develops work performance plans, evaluates performance, provides advice, instruction, and guidance, administers disciplinary actions, and determines developmental training needs. Supervises subordinate employees, including assigning and reviewing work, evaluating performance, training, taking disciplinary action, making hiring and termination decisions, and promotes a team approach to management ensuring accountability throughout the workplace.
