Hivemapper
Staff Software Engineer - Edge Mapping
Hivemapper, San Francisco, California, United States, 94199
Hivemapper is a decentralized global map data network built by tens of thousands of mapping devices. High‑resolution sensors like RGB, stereo depth, GNSS, IMU, etc. feed sensor fusion and ML models at the edge. Data is automatically uploaded in near‑realtime over LTE or WiFi. Enterprise tech, mapping, auto, robotaxis, rideshare, and entertainment represent some of the customers consuming data today.
APIs allow anyone to consume precisely extracted map features, HD map data, high‑resolution street‑level imagery, construction data, and driving events for AV simulation. Tech‑savvy customers develop and deploy software directly to our dashcams to get realtime data for change detection or visual semantic data mining. AI fleet‑management tools drive value to large fleets of vehicles.
Edge Mapping In 2023, we launched our GPU‑powered 3D reconstruction pipeline to accurately identify and extract map features from imagery and sensor data. As we continued to scale this pipeline globally, we realized that moving as much of this processing as possible to actual hardware would not only speed up processing and vaporize costs, it could also result in vastly superior data quality.
We began shipping our Bee device in January 2025, equipped with high‑resolution global‑shutter stereo depth, 4K RGB imagery, cutting‑edge GNSS/IMU performance, hardware acceleration for ML, and a high‑speed LTE modem.
We are looking for engineers with experience across sensor‑based mapping stacks and mapping systems to help us accelerate our continuous migration and evolution for more and more ML, sensor fusion, and HD map data processing on our devices.
Responsibilities
Evolve and architect efficient userspace software systems dealing with rich, high‑frequency data in realtime.
Build high‑level C++, Python, and TypeScript embedded applications and sensor fusion pipelines, and computer‑vision systems.
Use a data‑driven approach to iterating quickly with near‑realtime performance monitoring across thousands of devices worldwide.
Write high‑quality software that takes advantage of hardware paths when possible.
Optimize ML vision models to run on our hardware efficiently.
Qualifications
Experience with embedded sensor solutions.
Solid understanding of map‑data sensor platforms – RGB, global‑shutter stereo depth, GNSS, IMUs, etc.
Hands‑on Linux OS development experience for embedded systems (we use Yocto).
Proficiency in C or C++ and at least one of Python, TypeScript, Node.js, OpenVINO, or Go.
