The Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine (FJHM) is the dedicated development and alumni relations team supporting Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), including clinical departments, hospitals, satellite clinics, and the School of Medicine. We contribute to JHM’s mission of patient care, research, and education through securing philanthropy, fostering donor and alumni relationships, and supporting institutional priorities.
The Associate Director of Development is a frontline fundraiser responsible for the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift prospects at all life stages. The role includes prospect research, development of effective solicitation strategies, and stewardship of donors throughout the major giving process. The Associate Director typically maintains a donor portfolio focused on gifts of $50,000 or above and may require frequent travel and meetings on and off campus during regular and non‑traditional business hours.
The Associate Director reports to the Director of Development in Neurosurgery and manages private‑sector fundraising to support research, patient care, and educational needs for the Department of Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Key Responsibilities
Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a prospect pool for new and existing annual and major gifts.
Design and implement development strategies to build a portfolio, involving relevant colleagues where necessary.
Determine work‑plan goals in consultation with departmental/divisional development leadership.
Track fundraising activity in the CRM.
Plan and execute solicitation strategies leading to annual and major gifts.
Prepare proposals, solicitation letters, gift agreements, and other development materials that articulate Johns Hopkins University’s needs, values, and ambitions.
Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of the department’s mission, history, teaching, research, and clinical programs to communicate funding opportunities effectively.
Proactively communicate with major prospects and donors about specific ways to give, both current and deferred, to maximize gift and tax benefits.
Complete in‑person and virtual donor visits each fiscal year. Goals for visits and other KPIs will be set by leadership.
Develop and participate in implementing annual stewardship plans for donors.
Develop and maintain strong, trust‑based partnerships with colleagues across the institution.
Work with faculty and institutional leaders to engage them as fundraising partners in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting prospective donors, training stakeholders through the development process.
Partner with team members on the planning and execution of department development activities, including professorship dedications, lectureships, and stewardship events.
Participate and engage in team‑wide activities, meetings, events, and knowledge‑sharing.
Represent the division on committees and at institution‑wide programming when appropriate.
Analyze data to identify prospects, demonstrate activity, and track progress toward work‑plan goals.
Participate in special projects, programs, and initiatives as assigned.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree.
Three years of related experience, with one year of professional experience.
Additional education may substitute for required experience as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree (Master’s or JD).
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
