Excel Academy Charter Schools is a network of five schools in Massachusetts and Rhode Island serving 1,700 students, primarily Latino or Hispanic, who are the first in their families to graduate from college. Organization Overview Excel Academy prepares students in grades 5‑12 to succeed in high school, college, and their communities. We emphasize high expectations, rigorous instruction, and individualized support, enabling our nationally ranked high school students to achieve at the highest level and pursue their chosen college or career path.

About the Role The Facilities Manager is critical to the successful management and maintenance of Excel Academy Charter School’s campus in East Boston. Daily hours are Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with on‑call responsibilities that may require evening or weekend work. The role oversees safety, maintenance, regulatory compliance, and many outsourced contractors, working closely with the Dean of Operations.

Your Impact Property Management for School

Receive and respond to all school‑related work orders quickly, professionally, and results‑oriented. Communicate proactively about unresolved issues and expected resolution.

Diagnose and resolve facility problems—including leaks, popping tiles, broken windows—responding to property‑related emergencies.

Complete all repair and maintenance for the campus, performing hands‑on work (painting, patching, mounting, installing window shades) or coordinating with vendors as needed.

Facility Maintenance

Oversee the performance of all preventive, corrective, and general maintenance and repairs.

Complete monthly, quarterly, and annual inspections required by best‑practice standards or federal, state, and local regulations (fire, safety, environmental, assembly, elevator).

Procure, negotiate, and manage competitive property/facility services (custodial, mechanical servicing, landscaping) and provide field supervision to contractors and vendors.

Manage preventative maintenance records and implement maintenance plans based on manufacturer recommendations and industry best practices.

Facility Improvement

Recommend maintenance and operational improvements to enhance learning spaces, reduce repair times, lower energy costs, and more.

Support the Dean of Operations and the Network team to coordinate major building improvements and construction work, ensuring timely, accurate completion of capital projects.

Assist in executing and maintaining Excel’s multi‑year capital renewal & replacement plan, aligning local school needs with budget parameters.

Qualifications

Experience with vendor management.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Highly developed organizational skills and exceptional follow‑through.

Acute attention to detail to ensure smooth, predictable, effective outcomes.

Ability to work in a fast‑paced, high‑performing but sometimes unpredictable environment.

Experience with Google Sheets, Docs, and Microsoft Outlook.

Education and Experience Requirements

Minimum of five years of successful facility management experience.

High school diploma or equivalent.

Physical Demands

Lift up to 50 pounds.

Move throughout schools, including ascending and descending stairs.

Frequent repetitive motion with hands, wrists, arms, and shoulders. Requires standing, walking, stooping, sitting on floor, bending, using hands to finger, handle or feel, and reaching with hands and arms.

Special Work Requirements Some evening and weekend work may be required. Field work is critical. The role requires regular travel between school sites and reliable access to a car.

Preferred Qualifications Preference will be given to applicants who share intersections with students, such as advanced proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, or other languages commonly spoken by students and families; first‑generation college graduates; or individuals who grew up in low‑income families.
