Position Summary / Career Interest The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in the Neurosurgery Department in this position will work with the surgeons, and may document verbal or telephone orders, as well as progress notes in both the hospital and clinic EMR. He/she will perform nursing assessments on new admissions, consults, patients presenting to the emergency department, and make rounds on established patients. Responsible for nursing intervention, performing nursing procedures, and providing patient education congruent with the medical plan of care. This position requires a thorough knowledge of neurosurgery as it relates to his/her assigned specialty. This includes outpatient clinic assessment, inpatient/emergency nursing assessment, and first assistant duties. In addition, this position requires interpersonal skills to relate to the surgeon, patient, family members, ancillary personnel, and hospital personnel in a professional and appropriate manner.

Call Expectations Call Schedule: 1:3 night and weekend call rotation.

Weekend Duties: Participate in weekend rounding with the surgeon.

Emergency Coverage: Provide call-back support for first-assist duties during emergency surgeries.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

Perform nursing assessment on consult patients admitted to The Surgeon's Clinic; communicates with surgeons regarding the needs of the patient; communicate with the admitting physician as delegated by the surgeons.

Collaborate with surgeon and hospital staff as appropriate for the care of consult patients.

Performs initial nursing assessment of new admissions through the Emergency Department.

Works with the surgeons to make rounds on established patients; documents verbal or telephone orders on the doctors order sheet; documents on progress notes; gathers office records as appropriate and adds to the patient's chart.

Perform nursing intervention as appropriate.

Serve as a liaison between The Surgeons Clinic, hospital, and office personnel; maintain open and appropriate communication channels with the surgeons and referring physicians.

Collaborates with the orthopedic surgeon in the out‑patient clinic to provide care to patients.

Acts as a first assistant during surgical procedures, as applicable.

Comply with bylaws, policies, rules and regulations of Liberty Hospital to include corporate compliance policies.

Fulfills continuing education requirements as well as completes additional training as required. Ensures safety of patients, visitors, colleagues, and self.

Required Education and Experience

Master's Degree OR

Doctorate from an accredited program in Advanced Practice Nursing for APRNs or Masters in Physician Assistant Studies (whichever is applicable).

Age appropriate training for "population served" may depend on APRN/PA program training and may require additional training as determined by the department.

Preferred Education and Experience

Previous APRN or PA experience is desired.

Required Licensure and Certification

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) - State Board of Nursing Copy of the current advance practice license for the State of Kansas and/or Missouri (depending on practice locations) – PA or APRN - APRNs may obtain within one year of date of hire; Specific certification may be required depending on specialty within 1 Year

Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA)

Preferred Licensure and Certification

Family Nurse Practitioner Certification (FNP-BC) - American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)

Licensed Physician Assistant (PA) - State Board of Healing Arts
