Associate Staff Engineer, R&D – BD (Tissuemed Ltd)
BD is a global medical technology company dedicated to advancing healthcare through innovative products. We are seeking an Associate Staff Engineer, R&D to join our Medication Delivery Solutions team.
Job Summary As a key contributor on a research and development team within BD Medication Delivery Solutions, Injection Systems, you will leverage engineering principles to develop, analyze, and troubleshoot medical device components and systems for medication delivery modalities.
Job Responsibilities
Guide design and development of advanced biomedical solutions to meet business objectives for existing and new medical device products.
Lead major programs and occasionally take a project leadership role.
Act as prime technical contact on contracts and projects, representing the organization.
Coordinate with senior external personnel on technical matters across organizations.
Determine and develop innovative solutions independently.
Design in‑vivo and in‑vitro models for evaluating product features and improvements.
Apply creative, logic‑based, and risk‑based approaches to resolve technical challenges under business constraints.
Develop technical solutions to complex problems using sound engineering principles, design of experiments (DOE), and analytical methods.
Develop robust test methods, design test fixtures, and execute measurement system analysis.
Lead hands‑on bench studies, tolerance stack‑up analysis, design verification, validation, vendor interactions, material specifications, component specifications, troubleshooting, and root‑cause analysis.
Perform data analysis using statistical tools, generate reports, and present recommendations.
Support or lead material, design, and/or process changes to existing products through design control procedures.
Demonstrate strong drive for results and accountability for timely completion of tasks and projects.
Contribute to new product development capabilities, staying aware of trends in computational and visualization technologies.
Analyze data, present results to peers and business leadership.
Provide advanced engineering skills and product evaluation support to build business cases for new opportunities.
Contribute to development and implementation of R&D strategies through evaluation of new business opportunities, technologies, and acquisition targets.
Ensure compliance with BD quality policies, procedures, and practices.
Education and Experience Required
B.S. in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering with 8+ years of experience in a regulatory industry.
OR M.S. in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering with 5+ years of experience.
OR Ph.D. in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering with 3+ years of experience.
Knowledge and Skills Required
Strong scientific and engineering fundamentals, critical thinking, and systematic problem‑solving.
Strong technical judgment and leadership skills.
Demonstrated capability in leading R&D product development projects.
Experience guiding teams to develop technical solutions to complex problems.
R&D functional planning, requirement generation, and technical reviews.
Proficiency in solid CAD modeling (Creo, SolidWorks, or equivalent) and design for manufacturability.
Knowledge of high‑volume manufacturing process considerations.
Disciplined in phase‑gate product development and project planning.
Strong project management, prioritizing, and multi‑tasking skills.
Experience directing associates and leading small cross‑functional groups.
Proficiency with statistical methods including DoE and data analysis (e.g., Minitab).
Proficiency with fixture design and basic machining considerations.
Understanding of Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA).
Knowledge of Six Sigma (DMAIC) and Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodologies.
Effective communication of concepts and knowledge.
Strong creative, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Proficiency with FEA and/or CFD modeling software.
Work Environment For most roles, BD requires a minimum of 4 days of in‑office presence per week to maintain culture and operational excellence. Remote or field‑based positions will have different arrangements.
