Lumentum
Senior Silicon Photonics Design Engineer
Lumentum, San Francisco, California, United States, 94199
The Silicon Photonics Design Engineer is a key member of a team of researchers responsible for the design of silicon photonics chips for cloud and network applications especially for the rapidly growing AI market. You will work in a team environment to develop silicon photonics chips and components through conception, modeling, design, layout, and performance evaluation with a goal of feeding chip solutions directly into Lumentum products that are produced in large volume to meet market requirements.
Responsibilities
Complete simulations of chip components to continuously improve and optimize performance to maintain Lumentum’s leading edge and to find novel solutions for next generation products
Work collaboratively with packaging teams and other teams to ensure that chip solutions meet all constraints for target applications.
With a clear understanding of the fabrication process, ensure that designs are kept within manufacturing tolerances.
Participate in the construction of chip-test stations, providing support with mechanical and software requirements, and conduct initial experimental measurements before transferring routine testing to other teams.
Evaluate performance results for typical performance behavior and for yield margin in a cost-effective high-volume manufacturing environment.
Communicate with team members. Engage with others to both learn and teach.
Qualifications
A PhD in Electrical Engineering or Physics or equivalent combination of education and work experience along with a solid background in optical physics and photonics
Strong background in photonic device modeling and analysis of test results
Experience with test methods used to characterize photonic chips
Expertise in software development to run experiments and/or to script simulations
Demonstrated drive and aptitude for research and development
Excellent oral and written English communication and presentation skills
Self-motivated, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Desired Qualities
Proficiency with photonics simulation techniques such as FDTD, EME, etc. and software platforms that implement such techniques (e.g., Lumerical, Synopsys)
Proficiency with physical layout and verification software
Proficiency with statistical analysis software (SAS JMP)
Experience with fabrication of silicon photonics chips
